Internet Explorer Running at 100% CPU With Two Users

My machine has two users setup and used at the same time. Sometimes when I
switch from one user to the other, the CPU Usage goes to 100%. After much
searching, I realized that the iexplore.exe on the other (non-active) user
is cycling at 99 - 100%. If I switch back to the other user, the CPU usage
drops and if I switch back to the user without iexplore.exe again, sometimes
it will stay that way.

This is a very new occurance on a year old machine. What could be causing
this to happen? I have run appropriate spyware and anti-virus checks as
well and hijack this and did not find anything.

Thanks.

I can only relate what I recently experienced, and maybe your problem has
some similar causes. Suddenly I noticed that my internet explorer took a
real long time to start up, and that I very often was directed to a full
page Lycos search, even though I typed in a URL that is known to exist.
This was completely annoying. I tried everything, virus checked, used
various add and spybot finders, and nothing seemed to show up. I used
Ethereal to capture all my net traffic when IE was started up, and saw
that it was contacting some site that sounded like it had to do with adds.

Anyway, I recently re-installed my operating system (Windows 2000) because
I just wanted a clean install and was migrating to a larger hardisk. And
now my IE works like a charm! Starts up immediately, doesn't seem to use
many resources, and no Lycos search!

It seems that once something gets into your IE software, it is nearly
impossible to get out except for a complete re-install, so I hope your
problem isn't something like this.

Your problem may be completely different. I just post this to point out
that IE can very easilly be hijacked.

I don't think it is hijacked because this only happens when I switch users
and Internet Explorer is running on the idle user.

Full restore will be my last option. My next step is probably to force a
reinstall of IE.

I have Norton AV, run Spybot, Windows Defender, and Hijack This and nothing
looks suspicious.
