My parents have just gotten a computer at most three weeks ago. This computer
has gone through windows update(effective as of yesterday) and to the best of
my knowledge has no third party software installed save for what emachines
shipped it with. I had installed java so I could use web
based messengers, irc clients, and the like without having to install
anything on their machine and have since uninstalled java without any
noticable change to IE's behavior. The virus scanner that came with comcast
hasn't found anything.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi,
First, clear the IE cache. IE> Tools> Internet Options> General> Delete
files (and delete offline content when that dialog pops up) Then reset the
size of the Temporary Internet Files folder to 50-60 MB (Settings.) The
default size for the cache (TIF folder) is usually unnecessarily large.

Next, the computer probably has malware installed (adware, spyware,
parasites, trojans, etc.) Some antivirus programs prevent/remove this
non-viral malware better than others.

The problem's been resolved by, of all things, the comcast toolbar. As it
turns out said toolbar included spyware removal tools, which fixed the
problem.
