I changed my default browser to Nescape then I tried to go back to IE and I
can't. Whenever I try to run it I get a Message Screen that says: Our
Apologies: The page you are looking for no longer exits. I tried to download
IE 6 again and I can't do that either. Can anyone help????

Hi Rod :-)

You don't mention which version of Windows you have, but, try the following
and see if it helps:

How to Make Internet Explorer the Default Web Browser (Q284456)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q284456

In XP log on to the Admin account
Go to >Start>click on "Set Program Access and Defaults"
If you don't see a list there to select from, click on the double down
arrows at the right end of the line which will open the list.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jan,
Thank you for trying to help. I have tried that and when I move the bullet
to tell Windows to use Internet Explorer it reverts right back to "Use
Current browser" . I can't get it to change. I am using Windows XP sp2. I
have been trying for 2 days to get past this. Any other ideas?

Thanks, Rod

Well...here are a couple others I can think of:

To reset Internet Explorer settings
If you installed another Web browser after installing Internet
Explorer and Internet Tools, some of your Internet Explorer settings
may have changed. You can reset your Internet Explorer settings to
their original defaults, including your home page and search pages,
and choice of default browser, without changing your other browser's
settings.
1.. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2.. Click the Programs tab.
3.. Click the Reset Web Settings button.

Web Settings button
[[Click this to reset the default Internet Explorer settings for your home
and search pages, and prompt to make Internet Explorer your default browser.
Note: This only resets these settings if you have installed another Web
browser after installing Internet Explorer and Internet Tools, and that
browser has changed the default settings.]]

If you have tried that, or do so, and still no joy, then try the following:

Log on to Admin account
Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs
Add/Remove Windows Components
Uncheck Internet Explorer in the list
Click Next and finish out
Reboot and then go back and recheck IE and reboot
Open IE and see if it will give you the prompt.

If the about does not work, and you need to do a repair of IE and are
getting a message about a newer version, then go here and download this to
allow you reinstall.

Kelly's site has a fix which changes the IsInstalled flag value to 0. =

Download this, then right click, Merge, reboot, then try your install again.

Hi Rod :-)

My replies in line below:
2. I went to the add/remove programs list as you recommended. AND I was
not
able to find Internet Explorer on the list????

Not sure I understand this part....when you go to Add/Remove Programs, there
is a button on the left side panel of the window that says Add/Remove
Windows Components. IE is not a separate program with XP, it is a component
of XP, thus, you *will not see* it listed in the regular list of installed
programs. You need to click the Add/Remove Windows Components button on the
left side panel of the Add/Remove Programs window. When it opens you will
get the WIndows Component Wizard with a list of various components. Scroll
down to the Internet Explorer and uncheck it, click Next and then Finish.
Close out of the Add/Remove Programs window, close Control Panel and all
other open programs and reboot.

Open the Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and click on the Add/Remove
Windows Components button again, scroll down to the Internet Explorer and
recheck the box next to it, click Next, then Finish, close all other windows
and programs and then Open IE and see if you get the prompt to make it your
default browser.

If you get the prompot, click Yes. When you open Netscape again, it if asks
if you want to make it your default browser, click NO.
3. I did run the Kelly-Korner Registry update.

As I stated, this was in case if you were going to reinstall/repair IE got
an error message about a newer version being installed that may have
prevented you from doing the reinstall. Othewise, you didn't need to run
it.
4. I then rebooted and when the computer came back up I received this
message:
"Internet Explorer 6 has been removed from this computer".

So, how do I get it back? Do I have to re-install SP2?? or is there an
easier way.

First go to the Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs
Click on the *Add/Remove Windows Components* button again on the left side
panel of the window, scroll down to the Internet Explorer and recheck the
box next to it, click Next, then Finish, and then open IE and see if you get
the prompt.

If you get the prompt asking if you want IE to be your default browser click
Yes. When you open Netscape again, it if asks if you want to make it your
default browser, click NO.

If that does not work, then you should now just repair IE. Follow the
instructions below on how to do this.

First, disable your AV:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378
SP2 section:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378#XSLTH3130121123120121120120

The section
Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet
Explorer 6 works on earlier versions of Windows.

You will need your CD handy.

Be sure to visit Windows Update site immediatly afterwards and let it scan
for all needed updates and service packs.

Hope this helps.

"Apologies". Then down in the box itself, it says; The page you are looking
for no longer exists. Then down below that it asked for me to identify a
language and it then points me to the Windows Update program. Witch I have
done many times. I come up with no critical updates needed. I don't think
IE is actually running. This box does not go away until I make it go away.

Hope this sheads more light on my problem. :(

Jan,
I thought this was going to work. I now understand why I did not see IE on
the main list of programs, because it is a component of SP2 and not a stand
alone program. I did everything you suggested. I went to the Add and Remove
components and removed the check. Then next and finish. Then re-booted.
Then I went back into Add and Remove Components and put the check back in.
Then next and finish. I saw the updating being done, so I thought it was
going to work. I then clicked on the double down arrow and it still did not
show IE as the default program. I rebooted and looked again and still IE was
not the default program. I then clicked on the IE icon to run Internet
Explorer and it did the same thing; It comes up with the big box with the
blue stripe on top saying : Our Apologies, the page you are trying to access
does not exist. However, when I am in this group community that we are
messaging back and forth with, It says "Internet Explorer" right on top in
the Blue Stripe. Do ; I am really confused.

I hope this additional informations gives someone a clue.

SP2 section:

Hi Jan,
Thank you for trying to help. I have tried that and when I move the
bullet

sp2.
I

Well...here are a couple others I can think of:

To reset Internet Explorer settings
If you installed another Web browser after installing Internet
Explorer and Internet Tools, some of your Internet Explorer settings
may have changed. You can reset your Internet Explorer settings to
their original defaults, including your home page and search pages,
and choice of default browser, without changing your other browser's
settings.
1.. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2.. Click the Programs tab.
3.. Click the Reset Web Settings button.

Web Settings button
[[Click this to reset the default Internet Explorer settings for your
home
and search pages, and prompt to make Internet Explorer your default
browser.
Note: This only resets these settings if you have installed another Web
browser after installing Internet Explorer and Internet Tools, and that
browser has changed the default settings.]]

If you have tried that, or do so, and still no joy, then try the
following:

Log on to Admin account
Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs
Add/Remove Windows Components
Uncheck Internet Explorer in the list
Click Next and finish out
Reboot and then go back and recheck IE and reboot
Open IE and see if it will give you the prompt.

If the about does not work, and you need to do a repair of IE and are
getting a message about a newer version, then go here and download this
to
allow you reinstall.

Kelly's site has a fix which changes the IsInstalled flag value to 0. =

Download this, then right click, Merge, reboot, then try your install
again.

OK if you can please take a screen shot of the problem and e-mail it to me a

I hope I can answer this. When I click on the IE icon to start the IE
browser, I get a normal looking box. It say on the blue bar: "Our
"Apologies". Then down in the box itself, it says; The page you are
looking
for no longer exists. Then down below that it asked for me to identify a
language and it then points me to the Windows Update program. Witch I
have
done many times. I come up with no critical updates needed. I don't
think
IE is actually running. This box does not go away until I make it go
away.

Hope this sheads more light on my problem. :(

Jan,
I thought this was going to work. I now understand why I did not see IE
on
the main list of programs, because it is a component of SP2 and not a
stand
alone program. I did everything you suggested. I went to the Add and
Remove
components and removed the check. Then next and finish. Then re-booted.
Then I went back into Add and Remove Components and put the check back in.
Then next and finish. I saw the updating being done, so I thought it was
going to work. I then clicked on the double down arrow and it still did
not
show IE as the default program. I rebooted and looked again and still IE
was
not the default program. I then clicked on the IE icon to run Internet
Explorer and it did the same thing; It comes up with the big box with the
blue stripe on top saying : Our Apologies, the page you are trying to
access
does not exist. However, when I am in this group community that we are
messaging back and forth with, It says "Internet Explorer" right on top
in
the Blue Stripe. Do ; I am really confused.

I hope this additional informations gives someone a clue.

Thanks, Rod

Hi Rod :-)

My replies in line below:
2. I went to the add/remove programs list as you recommended. AND I
was
not
able to find Internet Explorer on the list????

Not sure I understand this part....when you go to Add/Remove Programs,
there
is a button on the left side panel of the window that says Add/Remove
Windows Components. IE is not a separate program with XP, it is a
component
of XP, thus, you *will not see* it listed in the regular list of
installed
programs. You need to click the Add/Remove Windows Components button on
the
left side panel of the Add/Remove Programs window. When it opens you
will
get the WIndows Component Wizard with a list of various components.
Scroll
down to the Internet Explorer and uncheck it, click Next and then Finish.
Close out of the Add/Remove Programs window, close Control Panel and all
other open programs and reboot.

Open the Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and click on the Add/Remove
Windows Components button again, scroll down to the Internet Explorer and
recheck the box next to it, click Next, then Finish, close all other
windows
and programs and then Open IE and see if you get the prompt to make it
your
default browser.

If you get the prompot, click Yes. When you open Netscape again, it if
asks
if you want to make it your default browser, click NO.
3. I did run the Kelly-Korner Registry update.

As I stated, this was in case if you were going to reinstall/repair IE
got
an error message about a newer version being installed that may have
prevented you from doing the reinstall. Othewise, you didn't need to run
it.
4. I then rebooted and when the computer came back up I received this
message:
"Internet Explorer 6 has been removed from this computer".

So, how do I get it back? Do I have to re-install SP2?? or is there an
easier way.
