Internet Explorer not responding

I have a Compaq Presario 705US that I got new a couple of years ago. My OS is
XP Home Edition and my problem is:

I have noticed for some time that my Internet Explorer was slow loading up
pages and going back to previously viewed pages (properties set to get new
page everytime Internet Explorer is started). This happens mainly when I use
a search engine. I opened up the Windows Task Manager to view the status
under the applications tap and it says that Internet Explorer is not
responding during the "slowdown period".

Does anyone have an idea what is happening? According to the Windows Update
option I have all the updates.

Have you scanned for viruses?
Do you have SP2 installed?

The clean sweep seemed to work. In the past I did clear out the cookies,
temporaries, and checked for spybots. I did notice that I had the privacy set
higher than the default and some things on the list after that were not
cleared in the past.

Thanks
