I have a similar problem and need HELP too!! :)
Bought second-hand laptop that had WinXPHomeSP2 loaded (re-installed).
I ran the update at microsoft page first thing, then I could not connect to
Internet anymore. I didn't know about Connection Diagnostics. Should I do
that now?

I did get a suggestion through NewsGroup to click on Start> Run and type in
cmd
there type
netsh winsock reset
and restart Windows

But that didn't work. Do you have any suggestions??

Many thanks Jenny

i can tell you this much...that is how my explorer got messed up to, was
after an update. i even called microsoft. i use firefox now. the first part
of the last reply:

1st,open
add/remove
programs,open windows components,open mgmt and monitoring tools,chk
all, then open network services, chk all, close out, press next for the wizard to
run. you will need the XP disc.

reset everything, but check internet explorer too when you see network
services. if you can, either use firefox or save it on a disk from another
computer and download IE 6 to reload on your computer. if you don't have the
XP disc..i don't what to tell you. i have been searching for over a week and
have found no help...just use firefox instead. you can download it from
mozilla.

I have had these problems and more for a few months, but due to a house move have not been able to focus on it. It does not happen with any other PCs/laptops here so its not the router! I have experienced this with both my browsers IE8 and Mozilla (which have the updates) and also I now have problems loading MSN Live Messenger. I also was advised to go to Start, Run, cmd - et al but no change. It’s erratic other wise I would not be able to get on this forum! It affecting my ability to work, I am considering a fresh install which I don’t take lightly to as its a real pain. Its something my side of the firewall but I've changed the AV & Firewall programs to no avail! I wont give up but I'm running out of options, so anyone out there who has any suggestions, please make them! Cheers BC

Hi,

Internet Explorer 7 can encounter problems that may not allow the users to connect to the Internet. One of the main reasons behind this error is corrupted or lost system files. In order to repair or create system registries, click on ‘Start’ menu and ‘Run’. Type the following commands and hit ‘Enter’ after entering each command. The commands are “REGSVR32 SOFTPUB.DLL”, “REGSVR32 INITPKI.DLL”, “REGSVR32 MSSIP32.DLL”, and “REGSVR32 wintrust.dll”.
