Internet Explorer not closing properly

AT some time after restoring Windows on my hard drive, I have noticed that a window pops up when shutting down Windows XP Home that says that IE is saving work and gives one the opportunity to "save your work" or just cancel this window. But a number of these windows come up in succession and have to be closed before Windows will shut down. Does anyone have an idea what these are and how to stop them? I had previously asked about this a few days ago and the only reply I got was that it was probably spyware and gave a great detailed procedure for getting rid of that. But is that the only explanation?
