For some unknown reason IE6 no longer appears in the list of programs in the
Add/Remove Programs selection of the Control Panel.

I wanted to click on "Repar" to see if that would correct the performance
problems I've been having. Anyone know why it might not be there? Or how to
get it back so I can repar my IE6 install?

Hi,
Windows XP?

What problems are you having with Internet Explorer?

Many (perhaps most) performance problems with IE are caused by third-party
programs.

You can try either by downloading the Tweak UI from here:
Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378

Or by opening a command run after repairing IE and type the following:
rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL IE.cpl click [OK] and Reboot your
machine, does it help?.

Or
rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL Inetcpl.cpl

Please make sure your machine is malware and virus free by scanning with an
up2date security software.

Don, sorry for the omission. I put that info into the immediately prior
post. I'm running Windows 2000. The problems I have been having are
detailed in that post.

BTW, thank you for the gentle hint about gong "naked" I don't do that as a
rule, but knew that the various Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs can
often be the source of the problem. By "stripping" the system down to only
IE, I thought I could perhaps remove the problem, or at least simplify the
diagnosis.

nass, thank you for the suggestions. Since I'm running Windows 2000, do any
of your suggestions work there?

Regarding malware and virus status, I've scanned for sypyware with SpyBot,
then with AVG and finally with SuperAntiSpyware. Both the first two found
only cookies and som generic adware that they ranked as only medium threats.
SuperAntiSpyware's scan agreed with the immediately prior AVG scan that the
system was spyware free after the AVG cleanup. Both Norton AntiVirus2005 and
AVG AntiVirus 7.5 found no viruses

Cannot Uninstall Internet Explorer After Installing Windows 2000 Service
Pack 1:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/265078

Before IE6 will become available in Add/Remove Programs, you must uninstall
any Windows 2000 Service Packs which were installed *after* you installed
IE6.

[Not that I think uninstalling/reinstalling IE6 will resolve your problem.]

Robear, why did one of the Service Packs eliminate IE6 from view? I believe
that access wasn't just Add or Remove, but rather Add or Remove or Repair. I
may be wrong, but I believe that Repair option was useful. I don't want to
remove IE6, simply repair it.

Thanks for your help.

There isn't a Repair option for IE6 in Win2K: You'd have to (1) uninstall
all Service Packs that were installed after IE6 was installed, (2) uninstall
IE6, (3) reinstall IE6 and (4) all Service Packs.

Use the tool below from MVP Ramesh site to repair IE:
IEFix - General purpose fix for Internet Explorer
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

Run the scannow on your Drive and then reboot.
BTW why you are running two Anti-virus at the same time?.
You need to remove one and keep the up2date and current one not two, you
will have conflict on your machine.

Thank you for the link to Ramesh's site, as well as the heads up regarding
two anti-virus programs. I failed to explain that I had fully uninstalled
Norton prior to installing AVG. AVG is the only one I have, but the results
of both programs' collective scans was germane to the discussion.

Thanks again for your help.

Subject: Web page load problems
Date: Sun, 13 Apr 2008 21:31:01 -0700

Whenever I open a new instance of IE it has problems loading. An IE6 screen
opens with the message in the task bar that the website has been found, but
the webpage doesn't load. If I right click on the task bar box for that
instance of IE6 it releases IE6 from the "holding pattern" it is in. If I
don't right click the webpage eventually loads two or three minutes later.
</quote>

Sounds like a spyware infection where the hijacker's server is either no longer
there or overloaded.

But to answer your question in this thread:
You don't need to see IE in your Add/Remove Programs to use its Repair tool:

<title>Add/Remove Programs tool displays installed programs incorrectly</title>
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/266668

(Live Search for
ie6maintenance "add/remove programs" site:support.microsoft.com
)

This is just an FYI. The tool that Vincenzo suggested is more complete;
although I think a caveat for lurkers with versions of IE7 or above should
be given that the list as given may cause at least one incompatibility.
Generally, re-registering .dlls for those versions seems to be less supported
or advised.

Also, IE Repair is not the first thing that comes to mind as a suggestion
even for a (vague) symptom description such as "performance problems".
For that you could try deleting (not just clearing) your TIF and History
and giving them reasonable szes. Note that you will need to use a different
account with administrator authority to do that.

You could also try running without BHO. (Ref. KB298931, Manual steps...)

BTW this is somewhat a case of "deja vu". You could get more ideas like
these by searching archives of this newsgroup from about 5 years ago. ; )

Good luck
