My computer got a virus & in fixing it I deleted some IE files. Now I can't
use IE repair and I made it worse by deleting even more files. I am trying to
install IE 6.0 and it tells me that I have an installation in progress &
can't go any further. If I try to install earlier versions it states that I
have a newer version installed already. I have no IE files showing up
anywhere and can't fix or install any IE files. What can I do? I want to
install IE 6 which I have on CD that I got from Microsoft. Please help if
able, email Alicia @ (e-mail address removed) THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH!

Hi Alicia :-)

What version of Windows do you have?

Removing some types of scumware can leave damaged Winsock keys in the
Registry. Some types of warez use the Layered Service Providers (LSP),
which are little bits of software that can be added or inserted into the
Winsocks. Outward bound data from your computer to a legitimate destination
on the Internet can be intercepted by an LSP and sent somewhere other than
where it is supposed to go.

In order to correct the mis-direction, you should download and run the
programs below that apply to your OS, which should resolve the connection
problem. If you are unable to download these programs from the affected
machine, you can download them from another machine and copy them to a
floppy disk or CD, copy them to the hard drive of your machine, then install
and run them. If you can't download these programs or information on your
computer, then go to another PC and download them to a floppy or CD and then
copy them to the affected machine and install and turn them

LSPFix
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Hi Alicia,

Unfortunately, this is not a case where an LSP fix is going to help.

Let's get the installation error fixed - you've not been very precise about
the error message, so you have a bit of reading to do. Check out the advice
at the URLs below:

Err Msg: Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 Setup Was Not Completed Successfully

When you attempt to uninstall Internet Explorer 5 or later, you may receive
the error message
Microsoft Internet Explorer *version* Setup was not completed successfully.
where *version* is the version of Internet Explorer.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q221475

A Previous Program Installation Was Never Completed

When you attempt to install Internet Explorer, you may receive the following
error message:
A previous program installation was never completed. You need to restart
your computer to complete that installation before running Internet Explorer
Setup. Setup will now close.
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q221/8/63.asp

A Previous Installation Has Pending Work Requiring a Reboot

When you upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 on a Microsoft Windows
2000-based computer, you may receive an error message that is similar to the
following one:

A previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You need to
restart your computer to complete that installation before running Internet
Explorer Setup.
You may receive this message when you run Internet Explorer Setup even after
you restart your computer.

Hello again;
I tried everything and very much appreciate the help, but nothing worked. I
was able to load IE6, or atleast it said it did. It tells me I'm missing this
folder and that file and IE will not connect to any website. My programs that
require IE will not work either. What can I do to re-install all the files
needed? I installed Win98 again, did not un-install - just installed, in
hopes it would restore some missing files, but it did not do a thing to help
a thing. If anyone knows what I should do, PLEASE email me. My ISP is REAL
slow due to this also. Thanks again for the input.

Did you not understand the implication from Sandi's comment?

We need *details* to help you.
Post exact transcriptions of any and all error messages you are seeing,
not your loose interpretations of them.

Telling us you are seeing something which is telling you you are
"missing this folder and that file" is NOT precise.
For one thing we can't tell if that refers to one message or several.
E.g. getting a message telling you "you are missing a folder"
and another message telling you "you are missing a file"
is *quite* different from getting one message which is telling you
that "path\file" can't be found. Etc.

My programs that require IE will not work either.

Another lost opportunity to describe your symptoms to us.
What specifically are you seeing?
Remember, your words have to substitute for what
our eyes might notice.

What can I do to re-install all the files needed?
I installed Win98 again, did not un-install - just installed,
in hopes it would restore some missing files,
but it did not do a thing to help a thing.

Well, at least you have finally answered Jan's first question;
so we now know your OS and thus have some idea of what tools
you have to work with. However, if your error messages don't
have anything to do with your OS, then it would not be surprising
that reinstalling your OS wouldn't change your symptoms.

Similarly, if your error messages have nothing to do with IE,
then repairing it or reinstalling it (however you tried to do that)
would also have no effect on your problem symptoms.

some of the necessary details might be recorded in Fix IE Log.txt

See this article for more information

<title>KB194177 - Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool</title>

More details about a failed install might be available in
Active Setup Log.txt
or
IE Setup Log.txt

You can find all those logs probably somewhere under your
Windows directory.

When I try to install IE6 I get the following message:"A previous
installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You need to
restart your computer to complete that installation before running Internet
Explorer Setup". When I rename the wininit.exe and then install, everything
LOOKS like it installed fine, but I still have the following problems:
I can't use any of my programs that require IE
I can't get IE to work
If I try to install OR re-install software that says "you must be using IE",
It will state that I am missing this folder or that folder and terminates the
install.

If I try to use a program that I had on my computer and use to work great
(untill the IE problem first began), I get the following message:
The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be
experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser
settings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is
spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click
Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should
match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or
Internet service provider (ISP).
If your Network Administrator has enabled it, Microsoft Windows can examine
your network and automatically discover network connection settings.
If you would like Windows to try and discover them,
click Detect Network Settings
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then
click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have
installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings
can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the
Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0,
SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer

Needless to say; Refresh and clicking on "Detect Network Settings" doesn't
work either.

Well, here it is in a nutshell :o) Help please! Thanks!
