Help please,

When I open a new window, either by going to File and New and Window or even
by double clicking the IE icon on the desktop or even in the Quick Launch bar
I can only keep one IE window open at a time. I scanned for Spyware/ Adware
with Ad-Aware SE earlier today and there was nothing returned. I also scanned
for viruses - luckily no viruses present. This is starting to annoy me. I
have XP SP 2 installed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try the following and see if it helps:

Open Multiple Windows In IE

To keep more than one browser window open at a time, click File in the main
menu, select New, then Window. To close a browser window, click the X in the
top right-hand corner or select Close from the File menu. You can also open
a new browser window with Ctrl+N.

You may have a program running which is blocking pop-up windows-
something like Yahoo Companion, Google toolbar, a firewall, Earthlink (or
another) pop-up blocker, etc. You'll have to uninstall the program or turn
off the feature that's blocking new windows.

With some programs of this type, using Ctrl+click or Shift+click will allow
a new window.

Conor, I am having exactly the same problem. When I try to open a new window,
the window is actually opened, but the previous window is closed. I can see
this happening in the task bar. Also, the remaining window has no history, so
it seems clearly to be a new window.

I did a Windows Update recently, following receipt of a Critical Update
Notification, and I am suspecting that the update caused the problem.

I ran the IE repair tool, but it did not affect the problem.

I am running Win 98SE and IE SP!.

Jan,
I don't know if I should be in this sequence or not. If
not, tell me and I'll start a separate thread.

With respect to your *many* suggestions: I have been
opening multiple windows in IE for years, and probably for
a year or more with the Google toolbar popup blocker
working. I have never had a problem opening multiple
windows until the last few days. I haven't changed
anything on my system except for the recent update to IE.

Thanks.

In view of this, without your having made recent changes or such to your
syetem, you may have a hijacker, malware, spyware or parasites on your
system causing this problem. These types of scumware can cause such a
problem to suddenly start up. In addition to running your updated anti-virus
program, you should do the following to be sure none of these are present on
your system. Some variants of malware can replicate themselves over and
over if not removed properly. Please follow all instructions carefully to
be sure your system is thoroughly cleaned:

I too am havin the same issue. When I click IE from my programs and I
already have IE open the new window opens, but the window I already had open
closes. So the end result is I can only have 1 IE widnow open at a time and
sometimes a site that I am "logged" into such as ebay suddenly is gone.
Becuase a new window opens and my original window is closed, the use of the
"Back" button is not available. This is very frustrating. I am running
Windows XP. I noticed this problem after running the latest windows update
also. I have no idea what changed, and I cannot find a setting to unset to
correct the problem. I did order the SP2 CD from Microsoft for XP, but have
not installed it yet.

I am running the latest McAfee internet security and virus software. I
have run the program to scan for spyware and the likes. Nothing was found.

If anyone knows what could be causing this, their suggestions are welcome.

Thank you,
Krista

I had been using the popup blocker of the Google toolbar without any problem,
but just to make sure, I disabled the popup blocker. This had no effect on
the problem under discussion: trying to open a new window results in the
original window being closed.

I noticed that what sounds like the same problem appears in another post to
this group.
