I have a friend running xp, and they have been having
issues with Internet Explorer. I dont have all the specs
on hand, or i would list them, but it is a year old upper
end dell desktop. For some reason the computer freezes
when using internet explorer 6.0.2800 by the third
window. nothing else is affected. Have treid clearing
the cookies, internet files, and urls, and doubling the
hard drive space allocated to it, to see if the issue was
caused by not enough memory, but that solved nothing. The
only thing that fixed it was tumping all the temp files in
windows, and that fixed it for 2 days. the problem has
been going on for months. I have talked to a couple of IT
friends and they suggested that it was the version if
Internet Explorer that they were running, and that to fix
it, all they would have to do was install the old 6.0
version of IE. (oh, it is not a virus, they use antivirus
all the time)

Any conformations/suggestions/fixes?

This is probably due to a spyware program
but could also possibly be a virus even though
you seem to be certain it is not.

I suggest doing this:

Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab

Delete all cookies
Delete all temporary internet files
(include all offline content)
Remove all Downloaded Program Files
To do that, you click on that "settings"
button and then click on the "View Objects"
button and then right click and choose remove
for all of them, if any, one at a time.
Close the Downloaded Program Files window,
Click OK to the Settings window.
Now clear History

(By the way the amount of space for temporary
internet files probably does not need to more than
500 MB if that large)

Now click on the "Advanced" tab at the top
of Internet Options.
In the Browsing section, uncheck the box for
"Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)"
Click "Apply" and then "OK" at the bottom
of Internet Options
Close out of Control Panel

Restart the computer

Download one or both of these Anti Spyware programs
and install them, update them and scan your system
and delete any spywares that may be found. You could
also try one of these free online virus scanners for a second
opinion in regards to possible virus infection.
