Internet Explorer in Task Manager

I hope someone can help. When I close internet explorer it appears to
close on the desktop but when I try to shut down windows I am told
that it is still running. I have since then checked regularly in the
task manager and although it does not show in applications, it does
often appear in processes. Tonight it was using 100,000K in the mem
usage column.

I initially thought virus or spyware so here is what I have running
now and checked with:-

Latest version of Spybot, fully imunized and system checked but
nothing there; I have Norton AV 2004 kept completely up to date, I
even did a manual virus definitions update to make sure nothing was
messing with live up date (no viruses found); I then went to McAfee
and did an online virus check, again nothing; I have the standard
windows firewall running (for what it's worth) and also Kerio Personal
Firewall (most recent version totally up to date); I have run CWS
Shredder - nothing found and also have and regulalrly run Ad-Aware,
again totally up to date and nothing ever found other than a few
tracking cookies (not getting through any more thanks to spy bot). I
have windows XP with all patches and updates applied and have a
broadband connection.

Now with that lot I would have thought I was pretty much ok but still
this problem persists. I am not experiencing any noticable performance
issues speed wise on the net either. Any ideas or suggestions would be
much appreciated. Am I just being paranoid and in fact it's just a
glitch?

Thanks for your help.

Paul.

Hi,
A few more possibilities:
Run Toolbar cop from http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Toolkit.htm Just to see
if there's anything you don't know about attached to IE.

Run BHODemon 1.0: http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm ,,, same
reason.

Disable some of your legitimate programs running in the background. See if
one of them needs to be reinstalled or have it's settings tweaked.

It might be a parasite that Ad-aware, Spybot & CWShredder don't find. Go to
http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm Work through
steps 1-6 then step 7- post a HijackThis log to the forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30
See "Instructions for posting HJT logs" at
http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=4075

Hope this helps,
Don
