Internet Explorer hangs

My home page is set to Yahoo and it loads fine when I open Internet Explorer
from the Start Menu. However, when I try to go to any other site (including
my favorites), IE hangs up and seems to cycle back and forth between trying
to open the new site and revert Yahoo. I have noticed that 100% of my CPU
is consumed during the time IE hangs.

This problem appeared after I downloaded Adobe Flash Player off a Disney.com
web site my kids just "must have."

Are there some settings I need to change or other actions I can take to
restore my ability to surf the web? My operating system is Windows XP SP2

Hi,
Try uninstalling / reinstalling Flash Player. Use the uninstaller at
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157
Flash player download:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
It would be interesting to see if the problem disappears before reinstalling
Flash.

Clearing the Temporary Internet Files might be a good idea.

Another troubleshooting step...
Go to Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third-party browser
extensions." Restart. That will tell you if a toolbar or other browser
extension is causing the problem. You will still have to find the
troublesome program, add-on, etc.

ToolbarCop from http://windowsxp.mvps.org/toolbarcop.htm can help identify
and remove BHOs, add-ons, etc.

Or this may be a malware problem- adware, spyware, hijacker, trojan, etc.

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Two questions:

1. How do I tell which version of IE I have? (I just upgraded to Windows XP
a few months ago. Does XP come with IE 6?)

2. How do I get to all the sites you suggest on the affected computer if I
cannot get beyond my home page?

Thanks,

Madatmickey

A1. WinXP comes with IE6. You must upgrade to IE7. What does IE Help >
About tell you?

A2. Use another machine to download & update your tools.
