Internet Explorer hangs during page loading

I have started to experience protracted delays (sometimes total hang)
when trying to load some pages.
The MS "globe" spins and spins but the status bar is only half way
along, sometimes 7/8th of the way along but the page takes forever (20
minutes) to load or does not load at all.
What causes this, particularly when I used to have no problem in the
past?
The problem doesn't seem to be limited to a single given site, some
sites load very quickly and others do not.

I am using 6.00.2800.1106 with SP 1 and all of the latest patches, right
up to date.

Unfortunately there's no one reason for what you are experiencing. When
troubleshooting I always like to try the easier fixes first: Clear
Temporary Internet Files (including all offline content.) And if you
have a reasonably reliable broadband connection, you don't need TIF to
be any larger than 10MB or so.

Hi Ted,

Thanks,
Have done all that to no avail.
Any other thoughts?

Brent

Unless you can think of a possible cause or causes for the problem,
you're left with a tedious process of elimination.

The next thing to look at is the configurations of software you have
installed between you and the internet, like antivirus programs,
firewalls, etc. Also review the choices you've made in Internet Options.

About the ONLY thing that has changed from when things worked fine was
the installation of MS patches.
Firewall and anti-virus are the same as they were a month ago when
everything seemed to work fine, as are the
Internet Explorer settings.
