Internet Explorer gives Visual C++ Runtime Error ?

C

Has anyone had this before? I am running XP Pro with SP1.

Following a crash where I was copying web page documents into a Word file,
every time I open an IE page from anywhere (line command or icon) I receive
an error message:-

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

x Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplorer.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an
unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information

OK

A second box with the same information appears soon afterwards. I am slowly
working my way back through Restore Points, but the last four have failed -
it says that the System cannot be restored from this point?

Also in the Internet Explorer folder there is a suspicious file named
"xuqfjha.exe" is this a valid Microsoft file - does anyone else have this
file in their same folder?

I am considering running XP again just to reload the system.

I would be grateful if anyone can shed any light on this C++ error or a way
to remove it or fix it?

Thanks in advance to everyone.

Cheers,
Ron.

The C++ error is often due to 3rd part browser extensions that have been
installed. These can be legitimate programs that you have installed like
Google tool bar, or malicious programs that cause many problems.

I would recommend visiting http://www.palmersoft.co.uk/support/virusfaq.htm
for details of malware removal.

Greg,

Many thanks for the advice. I had a Trojan Horse this morning (image dll?) -
AVG dealt with it - probably a definite connection there. I'm on the case
now.

Cheers,
Ron.

Greg,

You were spot on! I ran "HijackThis" and deleted three 'BHO (no name)
entries from the scan results and everything appears ok now. I've rebooted
three times and it has not recurred, so I am pretty sure the problem has
been resolved.

I could not visit your page before as it was a Catch22 situation, but have
now bookmarked it under my Securities favourites for the future - it is a
good reference site to have everything on one page!!! I'm now going to go
through it and try and improve my security some more.

Thanks again for your help in resolving this problem.

Regards,
Ron.
