Internet Explorer drops internet connection

I am running XP Home SP2 and IE Explorer 6.0.29 SP2 -- both have all updates
installed.

I run IE desk top via Ethernet connection to cable (RoadRunner) network,
also use a wireless Lynksys router.

Several months ago "sometimes" after the system would be left unattended, or
left over night it drops the internet connection. Other internet programs
(Outlook Express, Symantec Update, Spybot S&D Update) also will not connect
/ run.

My wireless laptop still runs O.K., so it is not the router or the network.
If I restart the desk top system - it is corrected. So it is not a crisis,
just an inconvenience (I have so much stuff to be done at startup - spyware,
virus, adware ...) -- it take just under 5 min.

Any guidance on correction of problem appreciated. Will uninstall and
reinstall IE is this will fix it -- if this is the recommendation -
where/how do I get the IE to install.

Thanks, Dick

Hi Dick,

If this is only happening 'sometimes' I would not worry about it as this is
probably just your ISP dropping out of service. You should be able to
re-establish your connection by re-booting your router (power-off, power-on)
instead of your puter.

Hey Rob, -- thanks for the input, but - the laptop via wireless still works,
so to me this say it is not the ISP as the cable modem, the router and the
ISP connection work on the laptop, but not the desktop which is connected to
router via Ethernet port. If I power of and then on the router, no change
in desktop. Only solution is to re-boot the desktop.

When I say sometimes, 90% of the time it will not work in the morning, and
if I am gone most of the day (8 hours) it also does not work.

Net is I would like to repair it -- to the point I am saying this system is
4 years old, let trash it and buy a new one.

How do I get a copy of IE 6 to install fresh? Should I use Add/Delete
Programs to remove it and then reinstall it?

Thanks, Dick

Hi Dick,

Sorry for the delay. I am a bit out of kilter on the other side of the
world.
Unfortunately I don't think that you can un-install and then re-install IE6
SP2 (non XP operating systems). You can search this newsgroup for the link
to repairing IE6 for Windows XP.

From what you describe I am inclined to think that your problem is on the
router end. (A duplicate IP mask?) Have a look at you network settings for
the puter that is causing you problems to check that the settings are not
duplicated with another machine on your network.

If you consider upgrading then there is the Windows XP profession upgrade
that will also help to migrate your existing programs and data to the XP
platform. It also includes the XP version of IE and the service packs.
Once you upgrade to XP you can then use the Home Networking wizard to
re-configure your network.

Hope I have been of help.

You might check in device manager..right click your NIC and on the power
management tab make sure "Allow the Computer to turn off this device to save
power" is not checked.

Have you tried using ipconfig commands instead?

Before going away like that try using (in a cmd window)

ipconfig /release

so then when you come back you can just enter

ipconfig /renew

Or before going away at least enter

ipconfig /all

(e.g. so you can see how much time is remaining on a lease)

IE has nothing to do with this problem.

Here is a link to a networking troubleshooter.
It includes a link to an XP networking newsgroup for followup questions.

Good luck
