Internet Explorer Downloads self destruct

I am running XP and IE with all the latest updates and patches. I have
recently loaded Windows Defender.

Shortly thereafter I could no longer successfully download any type of file.
A small, blank window would appear and the file would be deleted immediately
following the completionof the download. I fixed the problem by restoring to
a confguration from a week earlier.

As an experiment I reloaded Defender and had no problems for a day.
Yesterday I got another upate - I don't know what, but when I turned on the
machine, the Windows Malicious Code Removal Tool informed me it had hijacked
my homepage for the heck of it (I run several virus tools and spyware tools
and had no new malicious code on my machine - it was clean).

Then I noticed I could no longer download files again. Theproblem is not
Defender - it's the latest update.

My workaround is to use Firefox - I bet Microsoft thinks that' it's a cool
idea to force me to a competitor's product. If I can't fix this, I will have
to delete all links to IE and redirect all IE tasks to Firefox. Then I will
have to start start shopping for a new Macintosh. Please help me fix this
problem. If I restore again, Windows willjust grab the malicious update again
and I will be screwed for another time.

NOt that a "me too" message is particularly helpful, but "me too".

All of the suddentn I cannot download a file in IE6. Firefox is fine.

I'm stumped.
