When downloading a file, the default save folder is
always the DESKTOP. Specifically, the registry key
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer]
"Download Folder"="C:\SOME\VALID\DIRECTORY\NAME"

always gets deleted by windows after LOGOFF. How to make
it stick from session to session???

Look at the file type association for each type of download.

You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

Henri,

Thanks for reply. I've checked your suggestion:
the "Confirm open after download" box is checked for all
the typical download-type files. Recall that I do not
have a problem with the "Save" dialog poping up. Rather,
that "it does not remeber" the last forder and always
points to the Desktop folder in the Places dialog.

I have OS=[WinXP Pro SP1a] w/all the latest patches
installed (and, of course, have admin rights). Any other
suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks
