When I try to start Internet Explorer it doesn't work and
the default "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem
and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
page comes up. Under the error signature the following
come up: AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106
ModName: iefeatsl.dll ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset:
000143ce
I couldn't find this problem in any of the support pages
for Internet Explorer. Does anyone know what is going on?

Hi there David,

It's a spyware - CWS variant. Download CoolWebSearch destroyer from
here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip

In addition, you may download and install the Ad-aware spyware removal
utility from the following Web site:
http://www.webattack.com/get/adaware.shtml

Initiate the Adaware and it will deep scan the registry for spywares, After
the scan is finished, click [Next] button. Select all the items
(checkboxes). right click on any object in the "Scan result" list and choose
[Select all objects], Click Next and click OK to confirm spyware removal.

David,
From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions."

That should allow IE to work. Then Run CWShredder from
http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html It will remove this coolwebsearch
variant. CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it could be downloaded from
another machine onto a floppy disk if necessary.

You might also be able to browse and download programs from the address bar
of windows explorer.

Search for and remove other malware and note the security tips at:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.
