When I try to open IE, Control Panel, or My Computer, the
computer seems to stall for several minutes before
opening the application. With IE, once the browser
window appears, it won't follow commands from the address
bar.

I checked the error log under Advanced System
Information, and I keep getting the error:

The server {A4A58A2C-B039-432B-8BC1-DCA7A C0757DC} did
not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

Hi,

This may be due to malware Browser Helper Objects. BHO [ Browser Helper Objects ] load with both iexplore and explorer instances. You may try disabling the malware BHO using ToolbarCop, to start with. If disabling a BHO solves the problem, delete the BHO and run Ad-Aware scan. And, reinstalling Internet Explorer does not remove the malware BHOs. Their entries will be still present in the Registry.

Using ToolbarCop to remove the unwanted Toolband, Toolbar Icons and BHO:

Download Ad-Aware from www.lavasoftusa.com, scan the system and eliminate the malware products.
* Update the pattern file using WebUpdate in Ad-Aware *
