I am currently working on a friends computer who had royally f***** his s***
up. You name it, he had it. Spyware, yes...viruses, yes...computer wouldn't
boot in normal mode, yes...no windows cd, yes...shotgun hole to his
head........soon. Anyways, I have fixed EVERYTHING except one thing. Upon
bootup I keep getting a "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and
needs to close....blah blah blah...". The weird thing about it is that IE
isn't even open, not on my screen and not in task manager when this happens.
Another thing is this error windows doesn't have the 'click here' for mroe
information link. Not only that, but I can open IE, get the error, click
close, and continue using my IE window. If I close the error, It comes back
within 5-10 seconds over and over and over. Event Viewer shows a coinciding
Application error referrencing a txfpfl32.exe file (an example from Event
Viewer will be posted at the bottom of this page), but I cannot find this
file on my system. A scan of the registry indicated only one entry with this
name related to the spyware searchassistant. As a result, I committed
genocide against all searchassitant keys, strings, etc in the registry.
Needless to say, I still get the error. I have reinstalled IE6SP1 using the
registry entry "IsInstalled" set to 0, then reboot and reinstall. I have
thrown every security program I know at this thing and removed anything even
remotely suspicious (within reason). These programs include, but are not
limited to, Norton, NOD32, Spysweeper, Ad-Aware, Spybot etc. I can't use
windows defender aka microsoft antispyware because I can't get SP2 on this
b****. Windows update won't go because it fails when trying to install WGA
(this IS an OEM install of windows XP home, I KNOW for a fact it is
legit...my friend is too much a moron to know of, much less install a fake
version of windows). I haven't tried booting into Safe mode yet, even though
I did earlier to fix his other problems. The funny thing is I didn't have
this problem with IE before, only lots of popups/spyware etc. This problem
cropped up somewhere while fixing it and I don't know how, or more
importantly, how to fix it. Please someone give me something to try before I
have to give up and reinstall windows on his stupid computer. Hold back no
punches, i mean, ideas. I need only moderate instructions for any given
task. Any ideas?

Info from Event Viewer (I literally have pages and pages of this exact error
for every time I get the crash error for IE.)

I HAVE FIXED IT!!!! I am a frappin genius. A spyware program named supolbar
used a rootkit to hide it from my system. Using rootkitrevealer and icesword
I was able to remove the hidden folders/files/reg entries and now I no longer
get the IE error and drwatson has cooled down, finally.

Now only one lingering problem remains. Why can I not download/install the
stupid WGA thing for windows update? It just fails on me with no appreciable
error. Any help on that guys?

TY
