Internet Explorer 8

In this morning's Windows Update I note that Internet Explorer 8 has been
released. I look forward to to trying it out shortly, but I'd be loath to
lose my Internet Explorer 7 or have any interference with the setup of my
other browsers: Mozilla Firefox is my default, I also have Safari,
SeaMonkey, Chrome, Opera, etc.

is "upgrading" IE8 entirely reversible? Do I have to worry about it
adversely affecting my other browsers?

Does it offer enough enhancements to make the change worthwhile? Is there
any downside risk?

My tech colleagues and I will wait at least 6 months to a year before
deploying IE8 on clients' computers. Here are links which should answer
your questions and allow you to make your own determination. Further
questions about IE8 should be asked in its newsgroup:

Per MVP PA Bear - I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus
application and any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) before
installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a
third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the
Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

Tip: Reboot twice after installing IE8 Final. Make certain that your
anti-virus application, any anti-spyware applications (other than
Defender), and your third-party firewall (if any)
is supported in IE8 Final before you decide install it.

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage
(only) is available via the phone based on your locale through 31 December
2009. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows Vista in a non-domain
environment.

I try it on individual computers. If it runs like a dog, I take it off, but
if it runs OK, I leave it on..

It's currently being pushed via Windows Update. This should be fun.

I tried it a few weeks ago... crashed repeatedly so I uninstalled it.
I'll wait a while before I try again.

No problems with it here so far - Home Premium and Office 2007, Antivir
Premium.

I have to use several proprietary web sites for work.
Some of these web sites use Active X controls and some use an accessory
program that runs under IE.
Those that require Active X obviously will not work with anything other than
IE.
With IE 8 I have run into problems that will not allow these web sites or
accessory programs to run at all.
I would presume that the offending web sites were coded for the
peculiarities of pre-IE8 browsers and now are incompatible with the more
"standardized" IE8.
Vendors say they are working on solutions but downgrading to IE7 is a lot
simpler.
SOP for Microsoft.

Actually, IE8 was released well over a month ago; my records indicate
that I installed it on 19 March. Not that it was necessarily made
available via Microsoft Update at that time. I've not experienced a
single problem with it, to date; just a couple small annoyances:

1) I don't need or want my web browser offering me "suggested sites,"
but I haven't been able to find a way to remove the silly "Turn on
suggested sites" button.

2) The "Back" button doesn't work properly. It seems to get hung up on
the banner or frame ads on some websites, and goes "back" to them,
rather than back to the most recently visited discrete web page. This
issue can be alleviated - until they fix it - by using the browsing
history wedge beside the "Forward" button to skip past the ads.

IE8 seems, so far to be a slight improvement over IE7. It's
installation didn't interfere with Firefox, also my default browser, at
all, it didn't even take over as default browser. In fact, it quite
easily imported settings and bookmarks from Firefox, so that its initial
configuration time was minimal. Additionally, I have noticed that, on
the web sites I visit most often, IE8 is markedly faster than Firefox.

I can't say how it interacts with your other browsers, as I don't have
them installed.

Again, because I've had no problems with IE8, and because it's faster
than either IE7 or Firefox, I've had no reason to attempt to uninstall
it. I will say that the option to uninstall it is available via the
usual Control Panel > Programs > Updates applet.

Yes, I think I will do the same!

Your choice, certainly.

I can't even imagine how you could possibly conclude that installing
IE8 might render you "without a machine."
The fiasco I faced with the "bad" SP2 installation has certainly taught me
my lesson!

If you're speaking of SP2 for Vista, there has been none - other than a
beta version, which one would install only on test machines - released.
If you did run afoul of a beta SP2 installation, that would have
little to no bearing on the subject under discussion.

Never, ever install any major MS update until the market has had a
chance to sort it out. Generally it's better to wait for SP1 - and let
the dust settle on that too before jumping in.

Home Basic, Office 2007, AntiVir Premium here. No bigee... FF3 is my
preferred browser anyway.

I installed it but don't really see much difference between it and IE7. They
added a few more "features" most people won't be interested in. Speedwise, I
can't tell any significant difference between 8 and 7.
