Good to hear, I don't know if it was me who responded to that specific post,
but I did mention somewhere that Java seemed to be the only culprit I'd seen
thusfar for causing this.

If uninstalling Java doesn't work for someone else, try internet explorer
with no add-ons, it's available in system tools on the start menu.

It's not fixed.

It stopped doing it for long enough to make me think it was fixed, but now
it's doing it again.

I will un-install JAVA again and see if that will fix it again, and then I
will leave JAVA un-installed if that fixes it.

I installed JAVA to support Open Office, and Open Office seemed to work. I
guess I will give Open Office some kind of minimal test, and then un-install
JAVA.

I didn't report it in Vista, because the Bug Tool uses Internet Explorer.

That sounds more like what I had expected previously.

Sun will come up with a compatible version soon enough, I'm sure, just wait
it out :)

Internet Explorer was freezing, that is when I went to the Task Manager it
would show Internet Explorer as Not Running. Someone suggested that it was
JAVA, so I un-installed JAVA, and sure enough Internet Explorer started
working again.

I have lost the thread of the previous post so I can't credit the poster who
suggested JAVA.

When I installed JAVA a message popped up in Internet Explorer that asked me
if I wanted to install JAVA into Internet Explorer, and I clicked OK. Now I
don't know if it will ask me again, or just assume that I want it. I guess
that I will try reinstalling JAVA and see what happens.

Have you tried JRE 6 beta 2? Uninstall any previous version.

I uninstalled JAVA, and Internet Explorer started working again.

I checked Tools -> Manage Add-ons -> Enable or Disable Add-ons and there
were two Add-ons listed, neither of which were related to JAVA

Then I reinstalled JAVA, and Internet Explorer did not ask me if I wanted to
install JAVA into Internet Explorer.

I checked Tools -> Manage Add-ons -> Enable or Disable Add-ons and there
were four Add-ons listed, two of which were Sun Java Console and another
Add-on from Sun Microsystems, SSVHelper Class.

Obviously, since I was able to check the List of Add-ons currently loaded in
Internet Explorer, Internet Explorer was still working.

So

The first time I loaded JAVA it killed Internet Explorer

When I uninstalled JAVA Internet Explorer, it unloaded Sun JAVA Console from
Internet Explorer, and Internet Explorer revived

When I re-installed JAVA, it reloaded Sun JAVA Console into Internet
Explorer, but it didn't seem to affect Internet Explorer the second time.

It's hard to be sure, since I'm working from memory, but as far as I can
recall, I installed it the same way both times. I down-loaded
jre-1_5_0_07-windows-i586-p.exe and installed it by double clicking on the
download file, and then following the prompts.

I had an identical issue. Uninstalling Java worked for me as well, BUT I
noticed that if I reinstalled java but disabled UAP that also worked too. It
seems you can have one or the other working (Java or UAP), but not both. I
guess it's your choice. Which is more important to you? :)

No, I saw that, but I didn't see anything that indicated that it was a Vists
beta.

I assumed that it was just a JAVA Beta. But when I get some time, which may
not be until next week, I'll give it a try.

So far, Java 6 works well on my Vista machine. YMMV, of course.

It occurred to me that I had created another account when I was testing
something else, so I went there and tried Internet Explorer. It works fine.

At some point it had a yellow bar like the yellow bars when it blocks a
pop-up which said:

This website wants to run the following add-on: 'Java Plug-in 1.5.0_07 For
Netscape Navigator (DL...' from 'Sun Mictosystems Inc. (unverified
publisher)'. If you trust the website and the add-on and want ot allow it to
run, click here...

This was the message that wrecked Internet Explorer on the first account,
but there in not a No or Cancel option. so I just left it alone. But
Internet Explorer continued to work fine.

Then I returned to the first account where I had allowed the Java Plug-in,
and sure enough it still didn't work.

I also tried Open Office Calc. I loaded a spreadsheet, examined the
spreadsheet to make sure it looked right, , made some changes, closed the
spreadsheet, selected the save option, reopened the spread sheet and the
changes were still there.

It quit working on the other account. So I uninstalled Java, checked
Internet Explorer, it was working again, installed Java 6 Beta, Internet
explorer still worked, checked Open Office Calc, it still works. I'm not
going to say it's fixed for a few days, but it's working now
