I have been using I.E.6 since it was introduced, but the error reporting tool
has been closing the program down over the last 2 months with the folloowing
message.
"Version 3.0.8168.0 of file ATL.DLL exists, but the version needs to be
greater than 3.0.8449.0. Please run setup again to re-install all components"
I have re-installed I.E.6 twice now from the microsoft update site after
reverting back to I.E.5.5 but still receive the same message and closedown of
program.
Can anyone help ?

Hi Nut :-)
Hello Jan,
Thank you for the reply.
I am using windows 98 s/e with internet explorer 5.5 at the present as i.e
6
will not work for the reason given.

Thank you. :-)

I am not too familiar with this error, but, here are a couple of suggestions
that you might try.

http://www.dlldump.com/download-dll-files.php/dllfiles/A/ATL.DLL/download.html
or
http://www.dlldump.com/cgi-bin/downloadcounts.cgi?rt=count&path=dllfiles/A/ATL.DLL

also.......

You might also try to repair the OS, to the original IE5.5, then do the
update to the IE 6. I would recommend that you download the IE6 to your
hard drive, disable any AV programs, and then install it from the hard drive
instead of the Internet. I had to do this myself with my ME, as it seems
the Internet does not always work as it should.

Full installers for Internet Explorer 6.

Then go immediately to the Windows Update and get all the other updates and
necessary patches. If applicable, then update to IE6 SP1 as well and all
the patches there too. I reccomend that you take them one at a time, as if
you try to install too many at once, it can cause problems.

Also.....here is information on how to repair the W98 s/e:

Be sure that your AV and firewall is disabled before starting:

The Internet Explorer Repair Tool

or.........

If you have not already done so, then you might try a repair of IE6 as
follows:

or

You should also take a look at the information below to be sure that your
system if fully free of any scumware before doing the repair.

Hi Jan, Thank you once again for the reply.
I will follow your suggestions carefully and try to correct my problem.

It makes me wonder though if it is worth it as internet explorer 5.5 is
working perfectly !!

You're very welcome! I can't blame you for that :-)

However, for security you should upgrade to the IE SP1, if possible, if you
are going to be using the Internet much at all. It could save you more woe
in the long run should you encounter one of the new variants of the malwares
that are now making their way around the cyberworld. Now, not even the
'totally invulnerable' browsers such as FireFox, Opera, Netscape, etc. are
coming under attack as well. So, it is best to fortify your system as much
as possible. Make sure you keep your Windows updates current as well.

Good luck! :-)

Here's what a search of my XP Pro found, it doesn't look like it's
necessarily related to IE, perhaps to an extension of some kind or spyware?

(See the attached .gif file)

You are most welcome to a copy of the later version if you want to email
me - we can see if that helps any, but if you have toolbars or extensions
(or acrobat?) you may want to see if there have been any updates for those.
None of these older files seem to give me a problem on here, but this info
might mean something to someone else :)

Hi Jan,

Sorry to be a pain.
I have downloaded the full internet explorer 6 program from Planetmirror but
am unsure whether to install. Could you tell me if I need to do anything
else, will the program install automatically, do I need to uninstall anything
?

Regards
Mary

Hi Mary :-)

It is a Zip file, so you should right click on the file and select Open with
Zip, or whatever the term there is for opening Zip files. There should be a
Setup or Install .exe in the files there, which you can click to begin the
install process. However, here is the Readme file that goes with the
download, so you should be sure to read that first to be sure to get the
proper install instructions.
http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/microsoft/ie/6.0/README

If you only downloaded the IE6.o file, fine, best to go one step at a time,
then update to the IE SP1. Check your Add/Remove programs and see if the IE6
is listed there. If so, you should first uninstall it, if possible, as
described here:
http://hd.techdesk.info/os/win98/98addrem1.html
This will give you a clean slate to restart with.

Howeer, you should also consider the information Charlie has provided. It
is possible that it to be caused by spy or malware as well. The repair and
reinstall should be your last option, not your first. :-)

Hope this helps

Jan :)

Hi Jan,

Well, I have done everything that I can think of, virus checks, run adaware
etc, with no problems showing, so I have re-installed internet explorer 6 sp1
from my .cab files. And here we are back to the same old problem again !!!
What I can't understand is that on my home page and microsoft support pages
everything works perfectly, also outlook. But if I try to go to any other
website, including MSN,the error report tool closes ie6 down.Surely if it
works ok on some it should work on all ?
I guess all that I can do now is to try and return to i.e.5.5 again, if it
will let me.
Must say that I am downhearted to say the least.

Regards
