Browser components corrupt & will not repair. I have tried
to install IE 6 copy but but this is rejected on the
grounds that some files are missing. When I choose the
instruction to re-install all components it again rejects
this instead of downloading the missing files. What can I
do?
Here is a copy of a thread that was posted 6/3/03 on how to get
Windows to reinstall IE6:

Give this a try, while it doesnt actually uninstall IE 6
it makes windows think its not there even though you can
still browse and get to Windows update to reinstall IE 6.
* TIP: REINSTALLING IE 6.0

One of the most annoying things about Windows has always
been that sometimes, to fix a problem, you need to reinstall an
application (and occasionally the entire OS) from scratch. Windows XP
makes reinstalling some major components, such as the Web browser
(e.g., Microsoft Internet Explorer--IE--6.0) very difficult because
Microsoft tightly integrates the components with the OS. But some
recent Web browser problems sent me on a quest to find out how to
install a fresh copy of IE 6.0. The solution turned out to be well
hidden but pretty easy to accomplish.
1. Run regedit.
2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active
Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}.
3. Right-click the Reg_DWORD value IsInstalled.
4. Select Modify.
5. Change the Value Data to 0.
6. Exit the editor.
7. Reinstall IE 6.0.
8. If you also want to reinstall Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0, make
the same registry changes to the value at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active
Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}.
