I have 3 computers that will connect to google but not to microsoft. They all
have different operating systems and all problems started at different times.
#1 couldn't connect ever, owned for several years, computer had Windows 2000
server couldn't connect, installed Windows 2003 server couldn't connect,then
installed Windows XP still can't connect. #2 Brand new in january 2006 HP
Server with Windows 2003 server can't connect. #3 Dell latitude laptop just
bought off E-Bay with Windows 2000. None of them have KB908531 on them. I can
connect to a few pages but not to microsoft, symantec, MSN, Yahoo, etc. I
even tried making them allowed sites. I connect through LAN with DSL I can
connect to other computers no problem. I have plugged into different cables.
I have plugged directly into the modem. Nothing works I heard that IE is
trying to download too much information all at once on certain pages and that
there was a fix for this but I can't find it Help please.

it is connected to the internet but most pages don't load. If i'm at the
google home page and type www.microsoft.com in the address bar it tries to
load then just stops. If I just open Interent Explorer it tries to load MSN
in the bar at the bottom it says web site found waiting for reply. If you
watch close it does flash the IP address first. It just stops and doesn't do
anything else.

If any of them have the Google toolbar installed on them, remove it.
(Supposedly you can reinstall it again later successfully, if desired.)

none of them have google toolbar. I tried installing Firefox and it's doing
the same thing.

In that case I would suspect a DNS problem.
How long has it been happening? Perhaps you just need to wait
a few days and it could be resolved automatically.

FWIW here is my nslookup output for that site name

<example>
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: lb1.www.ms.akadns.net
Addresses: 207.46.198.60, 207.46.225.60, 207.46.20.30, 207.46.19.30
207.46.199.30, 207.46.18.30, 207.46.19.60, 207.46.198.30
Aliases: www.microsoft.com, toggle.www.ms.akadns.net
g.www.ms.akadns.net
</example>

Notice that the name is an alias for a canonical name of a caching server.
It seems that some DNS servers have trouble resolving addresses when
aliases are involved...

Hmm... I just tried "opening" that canonical name and got the Microsoft
Home page. YMMV?

Good luck

Robert
