Internet Explorer 6 won't close?

Recently IE 6 on my PC won't respond to file close nor to
the red cross at top right of screen. To close the
progam I've got to do ctrl+alt+del and use end task.
Also Windows Update now seems to hang on start up and
does not scan for required updates. Can anyone advise?
Thanks.

Search your registry for "NoBrowserClose". Should be in either one or both
of these keys:

User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
Restrictions]
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\ Restrictions]

See: http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/442/

This may have been set by some malware out there....

Usually they're placed there by spyware/malware that's gotten installed on
your system. Use Ad-Aware and/or Spybot Search & Destroy to remove it.

Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Spybot: http://security.kolla.de/
(Good site on how to install and use Spybot -
http://www.net-integration.net/reviews/spybot1.html)

More information here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ - runs a little script when loading page to
check for common parasites

If no joy, in IE go to Tools...Internet Options...Advanced tab, Browsing
section, uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions", click Apply, click
Okay, reboot. If that solves your problem, then more troubleshooting is
needed to find out exactly which program, or Browser Helper Object (BHO) is
causing this problem. You don't want to leave it at that, as some BHOs are
useful or necessary - like Adobe Acrobat for reading .pdf files or an
essential component of Norton AV. Get BHODemon -
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm - read all about BHOs.
Disable all items, and then gradually replace one or two at a time to narrow
down the culprit.

If all the above fails, then the problem could be something new that the
spyware cleaners above don't have in their databases yet. In that case....

Had exactly the same problem. Ran Ad_Aware and it has
fixed it! Deleted 32 Registry Keys!

Jon,
Thanks so much for taking the time to provide such a
detailed reply - much appreciated. I'll try the Ad-Aware
software first and see how that goes. Cheers.

Jon,
Now stepped through your instructions -
1. No sign of "NoBrowserClose" in registry.
2. Installed, updated and ran Ad-Aware and Spybot - some
material deleted but no joy to original problem.
3. Unchecked "Enable third-party browser extensions" -
Eureka - browser now closes!
4. Downloaded bhodemon and re-enabled Acrobat and Norton
Antivirus. So far so good but Hotmail seems not to be
working.

Will continue trial and error approach to progressively
re-enabling other BHOs until happy.

Many thanks for great succinct advice.
