internet explorer 6 sp2 won't start with extensions enabled

i've run adaware, xoftspy, spybot, noadware among others to no avail,
though i'm still guessing it may be spyware/malware. explorer starts
with the extensions disabled.

enabled, there is no error and such, simply nothing pops up.
realplayer works for browsing.
 
I take it you're disabling all third party extensions by going to the
Advanced tab in Internet Options via the Control Panel to get IE to start
up? It may or may not be adware/malware that's causing your problem, but a
BHO (browser helper object, another name) that's been corrupted. Via
Internet Options in Control Panel, go to the Programs tab, click on "Manage
Add-ons", then disable two or three at a time to narrow the list down to the
one causing IE not to start.
 
it appears this was precisely the problem (and yes, i was accessing
options through the control panel). thanks for taking the time and for
the help jon : )
