My explorer went down yesterday and i can't find out how or why. it seems to
be trying to find the site riogrande then i get the old cannot find
server/page cannot be displayed. everything else seems to be working fine and
all my virus definitions windows updates are current and i have run loads of
virus checks. i did a search on the internet for 'riogrande virus' and it
came up with the bugbear virus which doesn't seem to be anywhere on my
computer, or at least nothing is detecting it.

it's probably something really simple but at the moment frankly, i'm stumped.

Dan,
Sounds like you've been hijacked. Work through the solutions (CWShredder,
Ad-aware, Spybot) at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm Also note the security tips on that
page.

Additional information at:
The Parasite Fight http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
More security tips at http://www.aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
Bugs, Glitches & Stuffups: http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm

Hope this helps,
Don

Dan,
You almost certainly have a hijacker/parasite installed that's trying to
connect to riogrand-somethingorother.

The DSO exploits that Spybot is finding are probably false alarms. The
Norton firewall probably appears to be part of the problem because it's
blocking an attempt by this program to "call out." The XP firewall blocks
incoming traffic- but not outgoing traffic.

I'd recommend that you go to http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm Work
through steps 1-4, then post a HijackThis log for analysis (step 5.) Be
patient- they're busy, but they'll help you remove the malware.

Regards,
Don
