Dear Experts,

I am running XP SP2 with IE6 (6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158, 128
bit). What I have noticed lately is that on some (but not all as far as I can
tell) web pages, not all text will load.

is a great example. I lose all the text after the second sentence and
everything in the left hand side frame. When I run the cursor over the page,
I get nothing. When I look at the page using Firefox or view from a different
computer, the page shows up complete. As far as I know, the only software
added to the system in recent memory is Windows update via automatic updates.
This seems like an issue discussed in KB article 823386.

Can someone help me resolve this issue?

Best Regards,
Gar

Call Microsoft and get the hotfix.
If they determine that it is needed the call will be free (if you remind
them and don't discuss anything else).

Ok,

So I called Microsoft and got the link to the hot fix.

When I tried to run it, I got a message that said I needed to have IE SP1.
Since I have XP home with SP2, I thought that was a given. I went back to the
site and tried to run IE SP1 only to be told that a newer version of IE 6 has
been detected on my machine and the download could not continue. At this
point I am stuck.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Gar

What version of the module do you have now?
What version of the module did you get in the patch?
Unless they created a new updated version of the hotfix for you
my guess is that in order to try the hotfix you are going to have to
regress the version that you have now. (That is what the message
would be telling you.)

My understanding is that the latest security updates are being distributed
*without* hotfixes integrated in them (as they used to be) because of too
many compatibility issues (and probably to simplify testing).

Since you know the module you want to install and you know where
it is just extract it from the patch and copy it. See if it works without
causing you any unexpected problems. Your bonus will be if the hotfix
actually fixes your symptom. The price for adopting it will be the possible
exposure to whatever security problems the updated version fixed.
That is what you will be regressing.

Good luck
