internet explorer 6.0 shuts down unexpectedly

i just did a fresh install of windows 98se on an older
computer and the install went smoothly, however after
connecting to the web and trying to browse different pages
internet explorer shuts down and closes the page. If i
restart it the same thing happens. could the installation
of windows 98 be corrupt, or is it something in explorer
that i dont see? i went to a site and downloaded a new
version of ie6 service pack 1 and installed it but if i go
to microsoft to get updates it will shut me down every
time. any help would be greatly appreciated. it has me
very frustrated to say the least.
