internet explorer 6.0 continues to run

After normally closing IE 6.0, it continues to run in the background. This
is noticed by extremely slow operation of other programs. Through task
manager, it shows iexplore.exe in use and using approximately 97% of system
resources.

First eliminate any spyware.

Used various anti virus and adware/malware/spyware detection programs with
no luck. Also ran the winsock repair programs mentioned without any change
in symptoms.
 
Thanks Frank. For your info, problem was caused by Kaversky Anti-Virus
Program. Deleted program, problem disappeared. Reinstalled, problem
reappeared.
