I know, this is an IE6 newsgroup. But I got this message clicking on a link
somewhere.

Internet Explorer 4 is not currently the default browser. Would you like to
make it the default browser?

The Cancel option was grayed out. I had like 7 or 8 of these message boxes
up. I must have accidentally clicked Yes in one of them (or maybe not?).
Anyway, now no links anywhere (Outlook Express, web pages, Favorites menu,
etc.) will bring up IE. How do I restore IE6 as the default browser? TIA!

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol (NOT URL:Internet Shortcut)
and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

OK, I followed those instructions and still no joy. It still tries to open
Windows Explorer from some web pages, and does nothing from links. I did the
regsvr32, also. I even rebooted. Any other suggestions?

Disregard - for some reason it started working again. Thanks!

Are you certain it said Internet Explorer 4? What link, where?

Did you upgrade to Win2K from an earlier Windows version? Which one?
