I have Windows 2000 server I am trying to implement, but I cannot set up internet connection sharing or so it seems because I do not have dial up access? I have a T1 cxn at 512kbps. All I would like to do is be able to browes the internet with one of the other 12 computers on the network while I take down the Proxy Server

Any Suggestions? I am lost

Bill

You don't use ICS, you use RRAS to share the connection (use RRAS's "NAT"
ability). The T1 won't come to the Server directly,...there must be a
Router someplace. The server connects to the router with one NIC using IP#
& network settings provided by the ISP. The Server then connects with the
LAN using the other NIC using an address compatible with your Internal LAN.

The Server must be properly secured and patched before it is exposed to the
Internet.

Proxy2 was never meant to run on Server2000,...it was meant to run on NT4
and that is the only OS that it is truely dependable on. Yes, I know,...they
have the "Install Wizard" you can download to install Proxy2 on Win2k, but
that is just a "band-aid" to get it to install on Win2k. Proxy2 will
always be more "fickle" and unstabile on Win2k/IIS5 than on NT4/IIS4.

On the Server2000 you will either use RRAS to "NAT" the connection or you
will use the Proxy2 to "proxy" the connection. You can *not* do both, you
have to choose which you want and only go with that. The only time RRAS and
Proxy2 run on the same box is if RRAS is used *only* to create or accept VPN
connections.

Thanks Phillip,

There is a router separating the T1 and the proxy server. There is the ISP
address and the internal address.
What I am doing is shutting down the NT 4.0 Proxy server to upgrade it to
Windows 2000 and installing Proxy on that...and when finished I will
reinstall the the upgraded server to be used as the proxy server once again.
My problem is with the RRAS on the Windows 2000 computer that I have to
txr the internet connection service to. How do I set up the Routing and
Remote Access service?

thanks Phillip,

I did not make myself clear. I have another windows 2000 server not running Proxy that I need to install the rras to share the internet connection accross the network. While I upgrade this one.

I will not be installing RRAS and Proxy on the upgraded computer. Only Proxy.

I know it would be better to install ISA server on the w2k server, but budget restrictions wont allow. I have a tight boss if you know what I mean who complains about everything IT!

This should help on that.

Then just leave it alone on NT4. Why fix what isn't broke? Why take what
is perfectly stabile and thur it into something that isn't? Leave the
thing sit there until you finally get ISA, then bump the OS up to 2000 or
2003.

I don't know about Goldmine at all. I suspect SQL2000 would not run on NT,
but the Program requirements should list that information, plus if it did
not like NT4 then it just simply would not install on NT4 and the
installation would exit. So, you could just try it and see.

Good Morning,

Thanks for your response Phillip.

I am upgrading the server because I have to put GoldMine 6.0 with SQL 2000 on the back end.

Will NT 4.0 handle the SQL 2000 and the GoldMine app?

If it will, then I will stick with it because it is a lot better to just
install Sql and GoldMine on this server then to upgrade and install.
