Hi All,

I am having problem with connecting to the internet.
My ISP is connected to an XP pro PC and which is shared by ICS.
Normally I am using ICS (XP Pro) for connecting to my home network computers
to the internet.Recently I have added one more computer which is running
windows SERVER 2000 to my home networking system.I have downloaded the NIC
driver from manufacturer web site and I do not thing any problem with my NIC
driver.Cause when I ran the ipconfig/all command i can see it is getting an
ip address in the range of 192.168.xxx.xxx.But I can't connect to the
internet as well as i can't see my computer on the eorkgroup.
can anybody give me some info/advice/help to solve this issue.
Thanks in advance.

My advice? Ditch ICS and get yourself a decent broadband router/firewall
appliance (Netgear, Linksys, Dlink, etc). ICS stinks. Set up the router to
do NAT - and have DHCP run from the server or from the router. Since you're
using a server, you probably want it to have a static IP itself.

So If I have a broadband router/firefall ,could you tell me how can I
configure NAT on the Router.I am having a Cisco 2503 router.can i configure
NAT with that one.
I have got 5 pc's with windows XP pro running, and one pc with server 2000
..How can i configure the whole system for internet connectivity.
I am using a Broadband connection (PPPoE).

Yes. I don't know how, but it can do NAT.

Don't know if your Cisco can handle PPPoE...if not, get another box to put
between it and your LAN. They aren't expensive.

Thanks for your info.Lanwench

I think my 2503 router is not compatible for broadband.Just one more
qeustion ?Do you have any suggestion for configuring w2k server as A.D and to
provide internet connection for my all 5 XP pro Pc's.
Thanks in advance

Sure it is. It just can't act as a PPPoE client - Ciscos are not generally
used on consumer-type connections.

Configuring for AD? Well, that's a rather large topic. Short answer: run
dcpromo on it and run DNS, and have all clients--and the server
itself--point only at it for DNS, with forwarders set on the DNS server. All
clients should point at the LAN IP of your router (whatever one you use, and
is connected to your DSL modem, configured for PPPoE, whatnot) as default
gateway. You might also install DHCP on the server - generally better than
letting your router do DHCP.

I suggest you do some reading and play with spare hardware before deploying
AD, if you don't have any experience with it or Windows domains in general.
Also sub to microsoft.public.windows.server.active_directory and lurk in
there for a bit.

Hi Lanwench,
I really appreciate for all your replies.
O.k bye for now I try to implement the way you said to me and come back later.

or ??
No, point at your ISP's DNS servers. If you don't know them, you can easily
see what they are once the connection is established by your router & it has
a DHCP-configured public IP.

Hi Lanwench,

As you said I am trying to run my w2k as AD(XXX.com).
I ran the AD by Giving an Ip address:10.10.X.X
Preferred DNS Server:Same as the above.
Alternate DNS Server:ISp's DNS Server.
I successfully ran the A.D
Then I installed DNS server from Add/remove programs.
Installed DHCP Server with a new scope :10.10.X.1 -10.10.x.100 with
excusion from 10.10.X.1 -10.10.x.10 for future static addresses.

My real problem started when I tried to make one of my w2k3 system as a
member server into the w2k -AD Domain(which is running SP4).
I am getting a message that"Domain controller XXX.com could not be contacted
"Ensure that domain name spelled correctly.
I do believe that is something related to my SRV record,I checked my srv
record by running the command _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.xxx.com.it is showing the
records.

I am trying to add this member server(Comp1)to this domain.Because my DHCP
is running I hope that my server(Comp1) will definitely get an Ip
address.Taking that into consideration i did not add any A host record for
the Comp1 computer. So could you please tell me how can I solve this problem
and to connect my member server to access the internet?
Thanks in advance

So you have AD-integrated DNS for your AD DNS name, right? And now your
server and DHCP clients point only at the internal DNS server's IP address,
right? Your DNS server should be set up with forwarders to your ISP's DNS
servers for external resolution and/or use root hints.. See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;300202 for more
info.

You should assign it a static address, and make sure it points only at the
internal DNS server's IP.

Hi Lanwench,

But now I face with 2 problems, firstly I can't configure forwarders on my
W2K Dns server which is my root domain,it is greyed out and at the root hints
tab (No info).
So If that is the case how can I get internet connection.

2ndly for the time being i am running my ICS for the other two pC's on the
other 2 rooms)one is Connecting straight to the ISP).Now one of the PC which
is on my lan is getting an IP address from DHCP.So he cannot connect to the
internet. How can I solve that problem too.

thanks in advance

Hi Lanwench,
Now my scenario is like this.
one w2k computer(member server) in the domain xxx.com.
one w3k server which is AD-I domain xxx.com.
one standalone pc(XP Pro)ruuning ICS.

I have done the same way as it is said on the microsoft link.
My W2k3 server is the first D.C running AD-I DNS for xxx.xom
My w2k server which is also joined to the xxx.com domain. Then i ran the DNS
server on the 2000 server making it as a primary zone with the file name as
the same as the AD-I domain and alternate DNS server as the ISP DnS server ip
address which is running on the Xp pro(Which has ICS).Also I changed the
forwared with the ISP Dns Server in w2k dns server.Still I am not having the
luck to connect internet????

i don't know why still it is not connecting to the internet??
please help me to solve this problem

thanks in advance

You need to remove the "." zone first in W2k - the link I provided should
cover that.

Ugh. Ditch ICS. It's dreadful. Get a decent router/firewall.

As mentioned, ditch that. Seriously. Run DHCP from your server and get a
good router/firewall that does NAT.

Any particular reason you did that?
with

No no no.
Which
has ICS).

Get rid of it.
Also I changed the forwared with the ISP Dns Server in w2k

i don't know why still it is not connecting to the internet??

Because of DNS, and ICS.

Hi Lanwench,

I really appreciate your time for my problems.
But what you think If I ditch my ICS ??what is the possibility.
I am trying this configuration for particular reason,If u want i can ditch
my ICS....

Now I tried a different method it is working.I kept my ICS on XP pro.
Then I configured my 2003 sever with an ip address 192.168.0.x, D.G with the
ICS XP Pro addressand made it as a an AD-I domain xxx.com.Also i have
configured DHCP server on the w2k3 computer.
Then I joined my 2000 server with the preferred DNS server with ip address
of 2003 and D.G with the ICS XP Pro address.

But now everything is working, but I am pretty sure you never use this kind
of configuration in the real world. What kind of devices and configuration we
use it for Domain -internet connection in the real world.

What are the minimim requirement ,like how many SUS,D.C,ROUTERS(what kind of
devices),for example for 400 users in a single domain environment in a 4
different location(Either for 2003 or 2000).If you could atleast give me any
links i would be very grateful.
once again thanks for all your contribution.

I have no idea, but ICS stinks and is not suitable for a network of the sort
you mention.

Which is....?

I strongly recommend it.

A separate proxy server such as ISA, or a hardware router/firewall. In a
small network, even an inexpensive little Linksys/Netgear/whatnot would
suffice.

Your config is going to be a pain to keep running, relies on workstation
hardware, provides no security, etc.

I like sonicwall firewalls - others like watchguards - or PIX. Re multiple
locations - that's a much larger issue and belongs in a networking/AD group.

Thank you very much.Mr.Lanwench
