You've proved that something running in Regular Mode is preventing you from
accessing the Internet. The first choice of culprits would be whatever
antivirus/security software you've installed. Since you've told us nothing
about your computer, how you connect to the Internet, or what software
you're running, all I can suggest is that you do clean-boot troubleshooting
to determine what is causing the problem.

Thanks Malke

OK here goes, I have used AVG 8.0 as an anti virus, the pc is connected via
LAN (broad band) to virgin (urghhhhh!!) and the os is XP home. There is no
other software on it as it is a new and clean instal, someone suggested that
i need to look in my device mngr, but what puzzles me is that if it works in
safe mode fine, what is preventing it working in normal mode with admin
rights. Is there anything else I can give to you to assist me.
Cheers

Do you have the latest version of AVG? IIRC, earlier versions of AVG 8 had
quite a few issues. Does AVG 8 have a firewall? The router? If yes,
configure it and make sure you aren't running the Windows Firewall too. Do
you use a proxy server to get to the Internet or from AVG 8? At the router?
If yes, it isn't configured correctly. Any specialized software from Virgin
Broadband? If yes, perhaps it has a firewall and/or a proxy server that
isn't configured properly.

Again, do the clean-boot troubleshooting. There is nothing in a plain
vanilla install of XP that would prevent you from getting to the Internet
so it is something you added.

As an aside, after the clean install did you then install the drivers for
all your hardware? This would include your network adapter. Perhaps in Safe
Mode XP is usually a generic network adapter driver and you inadvertently
installed the wrong one. This last is a WAG, but I include it to be
thorough.

General information about drivers:

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

There is no specialist software required for Virgin Bband. It can be setup
manually without difficulty
The virgin supplied cable modem can be connected via Ethernet or usb.
My suspicion would be that its a firewall/AV issue
