I've had a W2K box in the warehouse at work that is used
mostly for shipping via FedEx. It's been neglected
regarding updates and my attempts catch it up failed. Left
with a clean install which I have done several times now
and think it took. The box is a little over a year old, so
the clean install put it way behind on updates. Brought it
home and hoped to hit my router for DSL for the updates to
save about a week of dial-up...reboot...dial-up etc. It
doesn't seem to want to hit the router and when I do
ipconfig, it just says
WINDOWS 2000 IP Configuration
Not able to do much of anything with it from the control
panel. Yes I'm logged on as the administrator.

Any insight?

If it was configured to use dhcp, then it should pick up IP configuration from your
DSL router if it is acting as the DHCP server which they usually do for most home
networks. Otherwise you may need to configure it to use DHCP being sure to record
existing tcp/ip settings so that you can change them back to what they were for work.
Try to logon as a local administrator if you are using cached domain credentials to
logon with that may incur restrictions via Group Policy. If you still can not change
tcp/ip try booting into safe mode with networking to see if that helps and another
option may be to use netsh via the command line to change tcp/ip settings as
described in the link below. Verify through Device Manger that your network adapter
you installed to access the router is installed correctly with no conflicts, and if
it is not you may need to install correct/more current drivers. The "ping localhost"
command should be successful. If that works try pinging computer IP and default
gateway IP. Trying another cat5 cable and plugging into another port on the router
may also be helpful. --- Steve

Steve,
Thanks for the insight. What I found is that the clean
install and being so far behind on updates, it didn't
have drivers supporting practically any of the
hardware...including ethernet card (as well as display
adapters etc.). Put in a new nic and it hit without any
configuring. Got all of my criticals done (43), 8 W2K
updates and 4 Driver updates. After finishing all
updates, everything seemes to have come back and it began
finding & installing new hardware like a champ. Thanks
again.

All right. Glad you got it working. I always keep a couple of 3Com 3C905-TX nic cards
around of which there are various models. They always auto install for me using
2K. --- Steve
