Over the years I have 98, 2k, ME, and Now XP all do the same
thing. For no reason Internet connection is lost. The cable
company can see the modem, but not the computer. I can ping
the NIC - 127.0.0.1 or localhost, and get a responce back.
Windows settings show IP address of 169.?.?.? or the modem.
Nothing else will return back a ping. Only solution so far
is to reinstall OS which always brings back the Internet
Connection. Tring to run the Internet Connection Wizard does
nothing. It also goes from Next page to Next page very fast
as if it is doing nothing. Upon pressing the Finish Button
which usually brings up Explored and access to the internet
nothing happens. Is there a data file somewhere that it looks
at, or creates.. Thanks
Joey

Perhaps you are using a crossover cable when you should be using a straight
through cat5 cable.

Nope, pins 1 & 3, 2 & 6 aren't crossed. This is on several machines
at different times that just loose their connection. I have changed
just about everything that I can think of in data files, registry, etc.
any more idea's?
