Internet Connection Sharing problem

Internet Connection Sharing.

Right, I've tried to get this working on and off for several YEARS now - and
quite frankly I've had enough. I have 2 machines - both win 2k pro and an
adsl connection.

The two machines can see each other, both machines can map drives to the
other, the client can even connect to the nt port of squid proxy server that
I've installed on the host to access the internet, but I can't get ICS
working as it should! I've followed to the letter the step-by-step guides
seen here:

http://www.homenethelp.com/ics/ics-install-s2000.asp
and here:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_2000

- but it never bloody works!

I've got firewalls on both machines, which during the testing phase I've
disabled momentarily to aid troubleshooting. The problem is just that
internet explorer on the client never picks up the internet connection
(whereas going through the proxy route it does).

I'm just utterly utterly baffled. Both machines have the latest updates and
have no spyware or virus issues (I scan them both with multiple tools,
multiple times, daily).

So - WTF?!

I know I can carry on using the squid proxy to get internet access - but I
don't really want to - and besides its tricky to work out how to run a few
dynamic java applets through the proxy cache like I want to be able to
(hence my wish to bypass the proxy altogether and just get the damn ICS
working like it should!)

I'll buy anyone a year's worth of beer who can help me sort it out!

Of course it won't work! You already have the Squid Proxy doing the job!
The Proxy is already the "sharing device",...you can't use ICS on top of
that or on another machine either.

Right. I've stopped Squid on the server. Unticked use proxy on the client.
Re-configured the client back to how you are supposed to have it and the
same old problem. It just doesn't work.

Squid merely listens on a port on the server - it doesn't share a device. So
that isn't related.

That's a lot of letters.

I couldn't really help without knowing exactly how you have the network
designed (IP#s, physical cable layout, etc).
The Cabling Overview at http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_2000 is one
of the most important things to have correct.

Then knowing the exact way the machine's TCP/IP Settings are would be the
next thing to verify.
