Internet Connection Sharing problem

I have two PCs in home network configuration (connected
via a hub) running Win 2000 Pro. One PC acts as ICS host
connected to a ISP cable modem through a separate NIC. ICS
was working OK for a while, but few days ago the client PC
lost Internet connection. Everything in ICS setup seems to
be correct (host and client NIC adapters are configured as
documented). I tried both dynamic and static client IP
setups. I can ping host pc (192.168.0.1), which means LAN
is OK. I can also ping a web site using IP address, but
when I use URL address, it gives me "unknown host"
message. IN the system event log I get dnscache error
message "The DNS Client service could not contact any DNS
servers...".

Any suggestions how to troubleshoot this problem are
greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like DNS. Host can browse ok? Make sure your DNS settings are
correct on both machines (client DNS set to 192.168.0.1?), and flush the
cache on both (Start>Run>ipconfig /flushdns). Have you rebooted both
machines? Also, have you made any changes? Added a firewall perhaps? Can
you ping "anything.com" from the host and it resolves to an IP? Can you do
that from the client?

I have exactly the same problem.
Both my PCs can share files, directories and printers etc
but it has lost the ability to use ICS.
This seems to have happened since the last security update
from Microsoft due to the new viruses.
I have also heard that people using XP have had the same
problem.
I think Microsoft need to look into this urgently.

its a DNS setting problem on your client machine.

run "c:\ipconfig / ALL" in your host machine.
set the same dns servers to your client machine.

Hi!
"The DNS Client service could not contact any DNS servers...".
Any suggestions how to troubleshoot this problem are greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

The first thing to do is to clarify whether this affects DNS resolution from
both PCs or just the ICS Client. Try accessing a website by name from the
ICS Host PC? If this works, then the issue is that the ICS Client PC alone
is having problems accessing DNS. If it does not work then you need to
troubleshoot the DNS Server IP address configuration on the Host PC.
In both cases, typing ipconfig /all from a command prompt will show
you which DNS servers are being used. On the Client PC, the DNS Server
should be 192.168.0.1 whereas on your ICS Host the DNS server IP(s) are
probably configured automatically on dialup. Your description of being able
to ping a remote address by IP from the Client implies the rest of your IP
configuration is correct.
Try statically setting the DNS Server IP as 192.168.0.1 on the Client PC's
NIC and see if that helps. You could also try stopping and restarting the
DNS Client service there. Check the error logs to see if the DNS Server is
still not contactable. If these things do not help, then it sounds as
though the DNS Proxy component of ICS is not working. Try stopping and
restarting the "Internet Connection Sharing" service on the Host PC. If
that does not work either then you could have a go at unsharing the net
connection and reconfiguring ICS on the Host PC from scratch.
Hope this is of some help.

Best wishes,
