New to this, please understand! Using Win98 and IE6.0 have had persistent problems (years) with connections to ISP (Freeerve currrently but previously totalise) it just disconnects for no apparent reason in the middle of downloading mail or a web page. Haven't got outlook express or any other application configured to disconnect after use as far as I know. When reconnected it can last a few seconds or, less likely, a few hours. Sometimes it can take a dozen attempts to get a connection that lasts. Most frustrating. Freeserves advice was to change dial up numbers but this just went round in a circle ending up back where we started. After some months of complaining they eventually sent me instructions to re-load tcp/ip, which I haven't attempted yet. Could this be the problem? Any advice appreciated in advance.

Sripey,

so many things!

try signing up for another ISP, just one of the free pay-as-you-go accounts and see if the connection's better there. if it is then you can give freeserve hell, possibly a problem with noise on the phone line, call your phone provider and get them to test the line, then scan your machine for virus' and spy/malicious software, failing that it may be worth reinstalling tcp/ip although i doubt this will make a difference. also check all connections to the pc and to the socket and maybe try without extention cable.

finally if all else fails try replacing the modem, you can pick up a new 56k modem for under £10.

hope this helps and let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the response James. Haven't I just a whole world of problems eh?
Fact is I've tried most things over the last year or so including getting the line checked, having the gain turned up, just using the PC and 1 phone connected to keep the REN total down. All the plugs sockets have been cleaned, remade etc. I'd even reformatted the drive and reloaded all software after a virus attack about a year back which is why I also doubted reloading tcp/ip would make any difference. Still I had the same problem.
SO..... I took your advice today and spent £15 on a new modem. What can I tell you...touch wood, it's been going all evening and NO problems!!! I cannot believe I've put up with the darned thing for all this time. If I thought it would get me anywhere I'd complain to the manufacturer as it's obviously been a problem ever since I first installed it. The moral of the story...ask people who are likely to have practical experience of the problem you have and take their advice. Oh yes...and NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM MULTITECH EVER AGAIN! Thanks again James, your a star.
