Internet connection lost after 5 min.

After surffing the web for 5 min, the internet will suddenly disconnect. I
have run various anti-spyware and malware programs, and did a virus check,
all from cd, as the connection is lost before I can even load one of the
programs from the web. I have changed the network card, (usb), changed
ports, installed a dial-up, and still have not had any success.

Any help or direction would be great.

Hi Vickie :-)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, but, try the

Hi Vickie :-)

Then the best piece of advice I can give you right now is to get an AV
installed, and get to the Windows update have it scan your system and let it
all the ones you need. Then you can worry about how long you stay on the
Internet. I hope that you have the Windows Firewall activated if not, do so
at once, before going to the Internet again.

HOW TO: Enable or Disable Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=283673&product=winxp

Until you can decided what AV you might want, download and install the free
version of AVG from here. It is free, and it is good and you need AV
protection if you are going on the Internet and don't have one.

Scroll down to he section where you find avg71free_375a716.exe and click on
it, Save it to your hard drive, close out of IE and then go to the AVG file,
double lick on the the exe and install it, then immediately run the update.

Go to Start and see if the Windows Update shortcut is on the menu, click it
and then install all the updates. Then see if the problem still exists.

Hope this helps.

Jan,

Thank you for such a quick response. I have installed an av, and it did
remove several virus, have also hit it with several mal-ware removal tools
and did find a key-tracker that was also removed. Because we can not keep
the connection alive long enough to update windows, I am at a loss as to
where to go next.

Thanks for the help

Hi Vickie :-)

Good job! Now..have you tried all of the connection suggestions that I
provided in my first reply? If not, try them now. Especially, disable any
3rd party toolbars, such as Google, MSN, or Yahoo. If you have Yahoo
Companion, uninstall it, it can cause a variety of IE problems.

Do I understand that you have broadband connection? Not dial-up? If it is
not dial-up, then you don't need any dial-up type connections, which can
cause the disconnection. Do you need a proxy? If you don't have dial-up and
not on a server, likely not.

Do you use Outlook Express as your email or newsreader program? If so,
there are also some settings that for OE that an affect IE as well.

also...you need to download and install and then run HiJackThis, it is a
very imporant part of the cleaning process, and could help find a rogue
scumware that the other programs could not detect. Follow all instructions
carefully.

How to download and install HiJackThis: Win 98-XP
http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html

Please.. DO NOT post your log HiJackThis log to this newsgroup. DO NOT
delete anything from the list yourself unless you are an experienced user of
this program. It is important that you post your log on one of the
HiJackThis Support Forums below and allow the experts there to analyze it
for you:
AumHa HiJackThis Forum
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30
to allow the experts there to evaluate your log and advise you of any
necessary steps to clean your system.
(Note: You will have to Register before posting on these Forums. Please
follow all posting instructions carefully to avoid having your log deleted
or ignored. All responders are volunteers and they are very busy, so please
be patient.)

I know you will have to work in between connections, but, do so, then post
the link to your post in AumHa back here in this thread so we can follow and
keep track of what is found there, if anything.

We're getting there....keep up the good work! :-)

Hi Vickie,

Had same problem with Windows XP. Temporary solution was to repair Local
Area Connection. Just downloaded and ran Registry Mechanic ($29.95).

Results: system runs faster and so far connection is OK. Will post notice
if this changes.
