I own a Compaq Presario 5WV277
I have no clue as to what kind of modem is in there, but
it is 56kbp (although when I hover my mouse over the two
small little computers in the task bar a screen comes up
that says the connection speed is 37.2 kbp, normal?)
My problem started about 1 week ago when I upgraded from
Windows ME to XP. I didn't just buy the upgrade, I went
all out and had the computer wipped and the full windows
xp version put on. Now before all this, my internet
connection was about the only thing about the computer
that worked right. It was fast and every site I went to
had no problems at all. NOW my connection is so slow I
find my self turning off the computer in frustration and
walking away. Not only does it now take 20 minutes just
to read an e-mail (and that's assumeing it will even load
the hotmail site), but I can no longer get to sites like
ebay (which I really liked) It says it can not find the
page I was looking for.

I have tried everything my small brain can think off.
My modem is the same as it was a week ago, why the change?
if you are a wonderful person who thinks they can help me
you should know I am using dial-up (not by choice, I live
in the country) and more importantly I will require a
step by step explination. (remember small brain).
thank you so much

I checked the Microsoft Knowledge base and did not find
much help for you there. I also checked Compaqs web site
in hopes of finding a new Windows XP modem driver. I
didn't find one. I did find an article about changing the
modem initialization string when you are having problems.
You can find this article if you search their site for
Internet and Networking FAQ. Maybe it will help you.
