Michael Melvin

I have an ongoing problem with my xp internet connection.

Running- xp- 56k-dialup-tcp/ip-ppp-norton internet security 2004-normal tel
line (ie: not ISDN)

I have got the line tested and all connections are fine, getting avg speed
of 50kpbs, tried different isp providers, all dial up and modem settings
correct

Problem is the connection hangs from time to time for no apparent reason,
have to disconnect and redial, the connection is not dropped by my isp, it
just hangs. When I hit disconnect nothing happens and I have to use task
manager to disconnect, it sometimes takes up to 2 mins for modem to release.
Occassionaly I have to reboot to regain acess to the connection icon.

PC is only 2 mts old and all windows updates are installed

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanking You

Mick

Hello Michael,

Have you updated the modem drivers from the manufacture or tested a
different brand modem? The reason I ask is because this sounds like a
problem with your modem driver.

What brand and model of modem are you running? If it is a winmodem it very
well could be the software that runs your modem that is having a problem.
If it is a winmodem, try to clean boot your system and see if it makes any
difference.

Shain, Thanks for the reply,

The Modem is: AOPEN FM56-PLX Controllerless PCI
The Driver is: Version 212.172.61.0 Dated: 6 Nov 2002

Tried a clean boot and also disabled some unnecessary background stuff which
has helped to speed up the system overall.
I cannot find any later drivers than the one listed as I think the company
has been taken over or changed?
I have uninstalled and then reinstalled the original driver
My ISP gave me a modem string to add (+MS=V34) which seems to have improved
things significantly although my connection speed has dropped back to
34kbps.

The problem seems to be more prolific when I close a page with lots of
data(images etc),before it finishes loading, or when I abort a download, or
if a webpage is unreachable.

Maybe I am expecting too much from a Dialup connection?

Hello Michael,

The string they had you enter limits it to 34kbps, which may indicate your
ISP being the issue. It is possible they do not have the infrastructure to
handle so many 56k connections and are causing the hangs. It is just a
theory, but why else would they want to limit you. Also to test this
theory, have you tried another ISP to see what you get?

I found an updated driver here -

http://download.aopen.com.tw/downloads/default.asp?keyword=FM56-PLX&Software
=Driver&searchoption=keyword&sel=category&Go.x=10&Go.y=13

It is dated 5-31-2003. Update the driver and see how things go.
