Okay, so Windows Update recently had me install Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Upon installing SP2, Microsoft Internet Explorer stopped working--it opens
and does not freeze up, but it simply will not open web pages (I get the
"Cannot find server" response). I have checked on multiple networks so I
know it is not the ISP, the drivers are all working properly and furthermore,
the network recognizes the presence of my computer and I can use the command
prompt to obtain an IP address, which is good, and I can also ping websites
and I get responses. This suggests to me that the problem is with Internet
Explorer since this is the only thing that is not working. After talking to
tech support for an hour and a half, they concluded that I needed to reformat
my harddrive and reinstall Windows. While this is a possibility, considering
I just spent an hour and a half talking to various people who seemed to have
questionable troubleshooting skills, I'd rather not do something quite so
serious until I know for sure that I don't have other options in terms of
getting Internet Explorer to work. Any ideas?
