I installed a pci firecard into my computer which is running WIN XP SP1. The card installs without a problem, however I lose my ability to connect to the internet after the card is installed. I can ping the NIC, the router, and DNS servers on the outside however can not connect otherwise. After removing the firewire card (both software and hardware), I still cannot connect and have to reimage. Can anyone tell me what I can do to resolve this????

Do a "repair connection" on your Local LAN Connection. Should solve the
problem.

I have run a repair on the connection, however this did not resolve the problem. I'm confused as the NIC still communicates, just not using DNS. I can still connect through the router to my other PC. My PC has a static IP assigned as well as static DNS servers as I am behind a router.

You have to remove the firewire card and do a system restore to an earlier day before you installed the firewire. It seem windows xp has a major flaw with firewire cards and people that use a dsl connection. Many people have the very same problem and no answers that work have been found yet.
