I went away on a little trip, and when I came back,
having changed nothing, my laptop (XP Pro) can't access
any of the other computers on my home LAN, and the other
computers (XP Home) can't see it either. Sometimes they
show up in one another's directory of the home network,
and sometimes they don't, and if I click on it it says
I "may not have permission" to use it. What has gone
wrong? Internet connectivity (via router) is fine on all
machines.

can you ping each other by ip? if yes, can you ping by name? make sure no
firewall on lan connection. or you can go to http://www.ChicagoTech.net
do-it-yourself tools to diagnose it.

I can ping by IP but not by computer name.

I can net view the one computer from the other by IP
address (the shared resources appear properly) but not by
name.

The computers show up in one another's "view network
computers" listing, but you can't click on them or you
get an error 'not available".

Both computers running XP, both have NetBIOS enabled.

This may be a little too simple. Do you have a system that is on all
the time? If so, may you had a power outage when you were away and the
system did not set itself up correctly. Try power eveything down and
try again.

TB,

could you check whether you have the DNS Client service running?
If so, stop and disable it and try again. That service is only
needed for Windows Server domains and it tends to get in the
way.
