Internet Connection Drops

I am encountering a problem where after about an hour of internet connection
(Cable modem, so I am always connected) I get dropped and IE continues to
hang and I cant check my mail etc... Then I cannot shutdown or logoff and I
have to reboot and when I do the connection is back up. What could be
causing this? Any help would be great!

It could be several things:

1. Malware on your computer - spyware or viruses.
2. Bad cat5e ethernet cable.
3. Bad cable modem (they do get old)
4. Bad router if you have one (they also do get old)
5. Bad network card (nic)
6. Problems at the cable company.

Sorry not to be more specific, but you didn't give me much to work with
in the way of details. The above items should get you started on your
troubleshooting, though. Post back if you need help with any of them.

Malke,
Thanks for the quick response....

What sort of details are you looking for? I recently installed SP2
for XP,
but didn't really notice any problem until yesterday. I have both
Spybot and
Ad-Aware, and have run them both. Do you think it could be a hardware
problem even though when I boot up my pc everything is fine and then I
get dropped, but when I reset it the connection is right back up for
the next hour and then it happens again.

Thanks - J

Well, details like what hardware you've got, how old is the computer,
how old is the nic, what have you already done to troubleshoot, do you
have a router or a direct connection from the cable modem to the
computer, that sort of thing. So you've scanned with Ad-aware and
Spybot. Did you do it in Safe Mode? What about antivirus? Is yours a
current version using updated definitions?

Of course it could be hardware, or it could be a problem with the
drivers for your network card, or the other things on the list. Maybe
something is overheating. The only way to troubleshoot is to do one
thing at a time and test afterwards. Work your way down the list, and
add updating nic drivers to it. Get drivers from the device mftr.'s
website, not from Windows Update.

You sound like you have had this happen to you, or have you heard of similar
problems from others? I am just curious, and I appreciate the feedback. I
thought I might have a crazy virus that I cannot detect, and I was about to
almost start reformatting my drives. Thanks Again, and any more infor would
be really helpful!
