Internet connection drops

I have a computer with 2 NICs and Windows 2K server loaded
on it. One NIC is connected to my cable modem & receives
DHCP address from cable company. My other NIC is static at
192.168.0.1.

I boot & connect to the internet fine from the server &
workstations on my home network. However, I've noticed if
I've been on for approx 6 hours or more (seems to happen
when things are idle), I'll loose my IP address on the NIC
connected to the cable modem.

I've tried ipconfig /release, /renew, and it will not get
another IP address until I reboot. After reboot,
everything works fine.

My question is, how do I prevent my connection from
dropping? It does this at least 2x a day.

I seem to remember a technet article explaining this but, I
haven't been able to relocate it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

use a cable/dsl router that maintains the keep-alive for the connection, and
you wont have that problem. Plus, it is wayyyyy more secure.

Make sure the internal nic is on top in the bindingorder.
Make sure both nics point to your dns-server (your server-IP).
Internal nic should not have a gateway.
If you are using RRAS or VPN, make sure you have done the regedits in
292822.

I checked my settings. I don't have any settings for this
NIC that cause it to shutdown. When I look at properties,
after it looses connection, it has an AIPA IP. I disable
AIPA & now when it drops, all I have are goose eggs 0.0.0.0

It seem to me for some reason, it just won't renew it's IP
after the lease drops. It only renews when I reboot the
computer.

Thanks for the help.

Do you know of a keep-alive option for a regular NIC? I'm
using the cable router as a plain hub for right now. I
was trying to get IAS services to work properly on my
server. I guess I could put the router inline after the
modem and before my server & use a regular hub to connect
other computers on my home network side.

Thanks,

I checked the binding order. The cable NIC is on top.
Both NICs use my server's DNS IP address and I don't have
a gateway configured on my internal NIC.

I could see the mentioned items being the cause if I had
constant problems but, all works great until (I'm assuming
IP lease expires) it drops it's IP and will not renew.

Thanks for the help.

Not that I am aware of.

If your Cable/DSL provider uses something like PPPoE and requires a client
software piece, it is actually the software that take care of maintaining
the keep-alive for the connections.

Most consumer routers for cable and dsl support PPPoE connectivity within
the firmware, and take care if it themselves. This relieves the complication
of having to install those client apps on the server (or whatever comp is
managing the connection).

A decent linksys that can do this should run less than $60 at BestBuy, or
other similar retailers.
