Internet connection and files sharing problems

I want to share the internet connection of my desktop (Win XP Pro) with
my laptop (Win XP SP2) through a crossover cable.

I run on both PCs the Network wizard but it didn't work, even if I see
in both PCs a notification that network connection is active.

I went into the network settings to tweak things:

on the desktop
1) I have shared the internet connection on the desktop
2) I have set the second network adapter to share files and printers
3) I have set the second network adapter to a static IP address:
169.254.0.1 (netmask: 255.255.255.0)
4) I have set the workgroup to be MSHOME
5) I have changed in the advanced TCP/IP settings of the second network
adapter, WINS tab to: enable netbios over TCP/IP
6) disable the firewall for second network adapter

on the laptop
1) I have set the network adapter to share files and printers
3) I have set the network adapter to a static IP address: 169.254.0.2
(netmask: 255.255.255.0)
4) I have set the workgroup to be MSHOME
5) I have changed in the advanced TCP/IP settings of the network
adapter, WINS tab to: enable netbios over TCP/IP
6) disable the firewall for second network adapter

When browsing the MSHOME workgroup on each PCs, they both see
themselves ONLY in the same network group.
They cannot be pinged, neither I cannot map network drives to each
other. I really don't understand this, as the physical connection is
detected!

Even the internet connection on the laptop doesn't work. On the
desktop, when I display all connections I get 2 groups:
network(containing network adapter 1 and 2) and broadband (containing
my Verizon connection, via PPOE). Which one shall I share? Network
adapter 1 or the PPOE?

Thanks guys!

Maybe you could test ICS first by allowing it to assign addressses as it is
designed to do. ICS will assign 192.168.0.1 to the host and 192.168.0.x to
any clients. In theory ICS can be overridden with static addresses but test
its standard functioning first.

Also I would NOT use 169.254.x.y addresses as static addresses as they are
in the same range of the addresses assigned if no DHCP server can be
contacted. Use 192.168.1.x instead.

P.S. Remember to disable any firewalls while testing. NetBIOS uses ports
135, 137, 138, 139, and 445.
