Suddenly I have a PC (W2K Pro SP4) that can communicate over the network
but not using HTTP protocol.

It cannot pick up an address via DHCP.

If I assign an address manually, I can access other PCs on the network.

It can open html files stored locally.

However when I try the Internet, or try to connect to my router on the
LAN at http://192.168.0.1, the first time I get a "Work Offline" error
with the text "No communication to the Internet is currently available".
Subsequent tries just show "page cannot be displayed"

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks.

Spyware - Winsock corruption. There's a tool out there called "Winsock
Fixer" or something that will restore all Winsock. Try Google.

On my way ...

Maybe I should have mentioned that the PC had Hotbar bits and pieces
installed that the owner denies all knowledge of installing - though
that happened a month or two ago.

It would not un-install but I have managed to rip it out via registry
surgery.
